.mp4 playback problem

Postby AaronAMV » Sun Jun 15, 2008 12:26 pm

Hi,
Whenever I download a .mp4 AMV, Quicktime either lags it like crazy, to the point where I can't even watch it, or doesn't play it at all.
However, I CAN play .mov format videos fine on Quicktime with no lags at all. Anyone know the problem?
If it helps, I'm using Vista.

Thanks in advance! ^_^

Your computer may just be old and cruddy, but before assuming that, try using VLC Media Player to play the file.

Quicktime won't play back all MP4s correctly. Either make use of a player with internal decoding (as mentioned above) or install CCCP and use your (decent) player of choice.

You can use the VLC to play .mp4? O_O
Ok thanks! I already have it and I use it, just didn't know you could play .mp4 with it.
Oh, and btw... My computer is 6 months old. :P

Then you don't have your decoding options set up correctly. Quicktime shouldn't enter into it unless it's set to do so. Media Player Classic or any other decent media player should also play the files just fine.

So you wrote the quick comment on one of my vids today? ;P

You can use VLC Player, but I suggest KMPlayer. It´s has at least the same possibilties as VLC and is much more handy. Yeah it plays nearly everything.

Please forget Quick Time >_> It´s an awful player.

I just didn't know, but now I do so I'm never using quicktime again. XD

Horrible, horrible player.

Seriously guys, stop recommending your crappy players that can't even get basic stuff right if the topic starter already has CCCP installed. Media Player Classic or ZoomPlayer with the proper codecs (i.e. CCCP) will play his file without a problem.

VLC is perfectly fine for AMVs, which is what the TC is trying to play. =\
It's still better than WMP or QT.

And before you insult me for saying that, I, too, use MPC on my PC. (I'm limited to VLC alone on my Mac. ;_; )

Yeah KM has some problems and the default settings are pretty strange, but I do think that it is the best freeware player for use. Zoomplayer is just shareware, but some kind of nice. I think no player is perfect, it´s about wich problems and lacks you´re willing to ignore and work around :P

Well, I still don't see the point in introducing him to players that generally perform worse, even if they can play most files somewhat decently. I've seen their numerous problems, so what exactly are the advantages of these players over Media Player Classic or ZoomPlayer? I'm not talking about automagically changing GUI colors here.

LivingFlame: You're certainly not limited to VLC on a Mac.

CCCP should be good enough to play them back :3

Only other thing I know of is MPlayer, which just blows. It refused to even recognize subtitles for me. So, without installing Windows on my Mac, what other player might you know of that's better than VLC on a Mac? I'd love to have better subtitle support if I could find it.

I'm not a Mac user nor do I have any experience in getting video playback to work on the platform, but this might help. Apparently, QuickTime is not that bad in combination with Perian and MPlayer should be able to render softsubs almost perfectly using these switches: -ass -embeddedfonts -fontconfig. Try adding -correct-pts too.
