Music Video Question

Postby kritikal » Wed Nov 13, 2002 11:54 pm

Ok I made an anime music video, it was my first one ever. I put a lot of time into and really like it. It is to one of my favorite songs but the porblem is everyone one I've shown it to hates it. I don't get it, in my mind it goes perfectly but they all say it sucks and doesnt go with the music at all. My question is, should I make it go to the beat or the words. In the beginning it goes to music but as soon as the lyrics kick in the video follows those. The problem is, if you ain't a hip-hop head the lyrics may be a little hard to pick up on. So should I change it around because the beat really pounds, but if I do that the lyrics are just going off with no relation to them in the video. Whatever maybe I'm just a noob and you all will laugh. Blah...

I second that. I too want to see the video, especially if it's hiphop, cause this is my fav music, and there aren't many hiphop videos out there...

Well, the trick is to do both. The best way to time and edit to a song is to keep both the music and the lyrics in mind as you edit. So find a scene that matches the lyrics, then do your best to time that scene to the beat.

The youthful Silver Moon speaks wisely.

Editing on the beat and matching up lyrically is pretty much a benchmark for a good AMV. Doing one while neglecting the other won't get you very many favorable opinions unless it's really something special.

One should also consider the melody of the song. This is especially important if you are working with music that does not have, say, explicit percussion for you to sync up to. Consider visual ways to foreshadow where the music is going; consider ways to integrate color and musical key; and so on.

I've tried to do such things in the past, and everybody hated what came out of it. But that's almost certainly because I can't edit. If, or when, you pull such a thing off, it would look really impressive.

Thank you all for the responses, I've haven't touched my music video for a while but now I'm all fired up to get back in it. I'm determined to drop some bangin hip-hop videos on you all.
