Do you actually still keep your vhs stuff?

Quite a few actually, noteworthy include Lodoss and Escaflowne, though I haven't watched them in a long time. My VCR is collecting dust in the corner.

I converted my Lodoss to mpeg simply so I don't lose more quality when the tapes start going bad, but I still keep em...

I only have a few VHS since I only got into anime after VHS became obsolete. But I'm a pack rat so I doubt I'll get rid of em

I guess this is where I horrify you with the news that digital on optical disc is not permanent and deteriorates with time as well.

Yup I've still got plenty of my VHS tapes. Anime include Rurouni Kenshin, Sailor Moon, CCSakura, Saint Tail, Rayearth, Magic Users Club, Gokudo, and a volume of Evangelion, Fushigi Yuugi, and Ah My Goddess.

I would get rid of these if ever given the chance but I that ship has sailed years ago. I still watch them though. Good anime is good no matter how you watch it.

I never bought much anime on VHS. Since I wasn't really into anime until later in life when DVD was becoming increasingly popular. I much prefer DVD over VHS, as would anyone, on several accounts. Easy to copy and backup, easy to rip and compress and edit with, and I can watch them on my computer, and since I have poor eye sight (which probably originates from looking at my screen so much) being able to rest my laptop on my stomach and watch anime close up is a nice little bonus feature that only DVDs bring to me. Not to mention DVDs are easier to store.

I think the only VHS I ever bought were a couple Dragon Ball Z tapes when I was a kid. I think that's about it.

Ah to be 13 again.

To be able to lust after a 13 old schoolgirl and actually not get in trouble over it :)

I was staring at some of my non anime vhs stash actually this morning and wondering wtf I even still keep it. "Oh I might want to look at it some day". Yeah right. I haven't had a workshop in like hmmm 5 years, but I might need my wood finishing tape :)

I think I am going to just be pitching some stuff out, I need room for my steadily growing collection of dvd media.

Yeah I found that out a long time ago with my Simpsons collection I was making...
The packrat upgraded to a 2 TB redundant disk array with offline backup  .

And my VHS collection grew a little the other day, found Photon at a yard sale. wth :o I'm guessing the 40 something woman wasn't the tape's owner, though I could be wrong haha.

Only related because it is about vhs after all.

Just acquired my father's collection of vhs Railroading. All manner of great stuff on railroading, primarily North American steam (he was never a fan of European steam).

So now I have something I want to watch, hate watching in vhs, and because it is my dad's collection, something I have reason to be partial to (he's passed away if that was not clear), I'm not about to just pitch it.

So I am back again pondering how to conveniently convert into digital storage.
The stuff was never cheap either, being basically off the beaten track like anime was in the vhs era.

I still have a couple of anime VHS lying around. I got some CardCaptor Sakura, DBZ, and some recordings of other anime that aired on cartoon network a while back. The other day, my sister and I were in a video store, browsing the anime section, and she was about to buy Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz. I stopped her and told her that I had it recorded on VHS, if she wanted to watch it :D. We had a good laugh about it and she ended up not buying the DVD.

Also, the other day, I was at my aunt's house and every last Pokemon and other anime VHS that had gone missing from my house in my life was piled in her garage. I was like, "OMG, that's where it all went?" and I was actually debating taking some of it back.

I have a VCR + DVD combo unit, so it's not like I a random VCR left collecting dust in storage. It just left collecting dust underneath my 360 and Wii. I keep it because sometimes my classes require me to watch movies and for some reason they'll only be available on VHS.

If you want a fairly convenient way to do it, I'd look at something from the plextor ConvertX series. There are cheaper solutions, but the one I use has a hardware encoder for MPEG-1, 2, 4 / DivX. Plug it up to the VCR and comp, open the simple proggy they give you, press play on the VCR, press record and stop on the comp and it saves to a file on the desktop using just USB CPU utilization. Much simpler than dealing with a studio program.

AFAIK, there's no way to avoid the 1:1 recording time from analog sources. Maybe something exists in the professional arena but thats out of our price range...

As for storage, if you don't want to go the expensive redundant and backed up HDD method, keep 2 'trusted quality' writable DVDs of the same material, 1 in a normal place for everyday use, another in a dark and preferably sealed cabinet / fire-safe or the like. Recopy the disks with verification from the stored copy every year or two depending on importance.
