DreamWorks to Make 3D Live-Action Ghost in the Shell Movie

Postby Super Shanko » Tue Apr 15, 2008 4:18 pm

Variety Magazine reports that DreamWorks, with the eager urging of studio co-founder Steven Spielberg, has acquired the rights to produce an American 3-D live action film based on Masamune Shirow’s Ghost in the Shell manga series. “Ghost in the Shell is one of my favorite stories,” Spielberg said. “It’s a genre that has arrived, and we enthusiastically welcome it to DreamWorks.”

Screenwriter Jamie Moss (Street Kings) will create a story and script. Avi Arad, producer on the Spider-Man, X-Men, and Fantastic Four film franchises; his son Ari Arad; and Steven Paul of Seaside Entertainment will produce.

DreamWorks distributes the second Ghost in the Shell anime feature film, Innocence, in America. Spielberg has been an acknowledged fan of anime since, at least, the mid 1980s.

Because it's 3-D and not live action, im actually looking forward to it since it might not blow.

Well it has a pretty good American pedigree coming from an even better Japanese pedigree, so here's hoping that it isn't a train wreck.

Once that come over to Briton i'll like to see it, i think that it won't be as good as the anime (or the anime films).

Sounds pretty good. Although, personally i think id rather see an actual live action GITS.

That would be interesting, but I shudder to think at the "Hollywood" casting they'd try and throw at it...

Mine still do! :nono:

Moving on from that, i'd be fine with her appearance if she basically looked like the 3D version from the opening, But since its the US Im guessing the Major herself will have a completely new look, while everyone else stay's the same of course, the Tachcoma's might be there for added action and if were lucky it wont be like Beowulf where they look like real people rather than anime characters.

On a few lighter notes, this movie could have done worse, the Matrix guys could have gotten it and done it like Speed Racer.

Cool Gits 3D, shouls be interesting
Seems there a big interest atm in holywood with Animes,
This makes the 3rd one to be made by a big production firm.

"Neon genesis evangelion" is being made by Peter Jackson's Company "Weta Digital"
"Battle Angel Alita" is being made by James Cameron (Lightstorm Entertainment) (Massive 200 millon budget)

the next few years look fun for anime

On that note, weren't there talks of a DBZ live action movie? Lord...I have zero hopes for such a thing if it's true...

As for a CG GitS, that I want to see. Sounds intriguing.

Sadly, it's in the works and there are production screens around the web.
