To HD or not to HD?

Postby JediNight » Sun Apr 13, 2008 3:28 pm

I'm starting a True Tears AMV atm with true HD source (1440x1080 anamorphic, so it plays back at 1920x1080 for correct AR)...

--Should I try to clear off enough space to re-encode it into Lagarith files, or go with something more reasonable like 848x480?

I know that most cons prefer or convert videos into MPEG2 standard for contests, but it would seem nice to keep the master or archive version at the higher res.

Any comments?

A lot of anime is just upscaled, so theres really no benefit keeping it at HD.
If it's really HD though, then you just have to compare the space requirements, and the slower processing speed while editing, and see if you are willing to take that hit.

Yeah, I'm going to say it's most likely not 1080p, but it's definitely at least 720p. You can really tell the 480p upscales, because they are garbage.

Here's an example shot in 1080p and downscaling the raw to 720:

I wouldn´t consider (at your situation) to be worth it. Why should you clean up your whole hd (well you should clean it anyway from time to time, but that´s not the point)?

Furthermore I doubt that a lot of people will watch your amv on a full hd medium. Let´s say: You could edit with it. Why not... but when it requires some additional work I don´t feel that it´s worth it for now.

You better pay more attention about the points that Zarx brought up.

Most people don't even have monitors large enough to view HD amvs.

I've always liked to work with HD, and I guess I'm one of those who has the monitor\pc to watch it on as well.
But really, if you find some real GOOD HD, like Appleseed HD in suppah high quality, then it's just plain sex, but if it is as mentioned upscaled, then it's not worth it. I once saw an anime opening in 1920x1200, exactly the size of my mac monitor, and it looked 100 % normal, couldn't see any difference between it in SD and HD.

But still, working inside AE with HD is just awesome, so much room to work on =D

You haven't lived until you worked in AE @ 17212 x 11475.

If anything HD makes masking easier then SD even when mere upscales.

I definitely wouldn't suggest working in 1080p if you're looking to use an entire series and you need to convert to a lossless format. If you can manage to get it editable using the original source (ie; processing it through AVIsynth and editing in a program that allows you to edit straight from the AVS or can do bait-and-switch), then I say go for it.

However, in this case, it does indeed look like an upscale, so I'd say downscale it to 720p and work from there.

Yay True Tears!

[Large images converted to links, thread moved.]

Oh yeah, I vote for the 720p.

The screenshot you posted almost definitely is also upscaled. The lines are just way too unsharp.

In case of anime, only very few shows are true 720p, and next to none actually benefit from the resolution (example of benefit: Ergo Proxy opening).

Keep in mind though that most upscaled raws still look much better than the 704x396 versions, because of much higher bitrate.
