I should know this after being here for a while, but what is an OVA? I know a movie is..well... a 2 hour long feature film, sorta. And a series is a story broken up into short episodes...what's an OVA?

I'll watch anything but when it comes to editing, I generally like working with movies and OVA's since it's easier to work with. :D

I think that for AMV's series are the best since you have the most footage to work with, so you have many many more posibilities for what your AMV will turn out like, and what you want it to be like. but for watching I like movies the best, the script writers get more freedow then they would get with a series since they script doesn't need to fit a 24 minute timeframe. And the animation department REALY gets to go nuts, right now My favorite animes are all movies, and all tied for first. Anyone that has seen vampire hunter d bloodlust knows exactly how much detail the animators have to put in their movies, and how LITTLE detail there is in shows and OVA's. OVA's are my halfway point between the movies and series. they have more footage than movies, but less than series, and for watching they are right between sereis and movies again, since they arent being aired they are as long as the creators want them to be, but they arent the high budget projects taht movies are so they lack in the animation department.

Yeah, an OAV is an Anime seires that doesn't show on TV. Goes straight to Tape/DVD/VCD.

-------------

I like Movies the most cause they are usually so high-quality. But Series do last a long-time and are very worth-while. But then OAVs are usually cool little experiments that turn to be very original and unique Anime. Ahh...... Anime is cool either way!

Maybe if there was a single Anime that was made in all 3 ways, we could tell for sure which one is best. ^_^

Correction, an OVA is a SHORT series that goes straight to video. I have yet to see an OVA that's as long as an actual series. They are usually only 2-4 episodes long. Personally, I like series the best. They are longer, so you get a lot more character development and plot usually. There are a lot of damn good OVA's too though. FLCL is my favorite anime, period. And there's also Read or Die and Angel Sanctuary, just to name a few.

If there was a 20-ep series that went straight to VHS/VCD/DVD, it'd still be an OAV, right? I don't think how long it is makes a difference.

Actually, it'd probably be called an OAV Series or something.

No, I'm pretty sure OVA is used for short series's that go straight to video. If it was a full length series, I think it would just be called a straight-to-video series or something. I don't really know, all I know is that the longest OVE I have ever heard of is FLCL, and it's only 6 eps.

I'm pretty sure that if they were going to go to the trouble of arranging the financial needs for a 24-ep series, they would air it rather than send it straight to video.

That being said, I personally have no preference for one over the other. I've seen great series, incredible OAVs, and excellent movies. The length doesn't make it better or worse; it's the idea and the concept behind it.

Which is the best?

Postby HellBlazer » Sun Nov 10, 2002 4:39 pm

I think series are the best cause they are usually way long den movies and OAVs. They've got more characters, better and longer story, etc, etc. I'd say the 1 thing movies and OAVs have over the series is the (sometimes) better quality animation and effects.

And lets not forget, OVA's can be more than a series that goes to video, some are specials for series. Look at the Kenshin OVA's for example.

An OAV (Original Animation Video), or OVA (Original Video Animation) is a short mini-series that is directly released to video. They're usually spin-offs of a series (Tenchi Muyo, Rurouni Kenshin, Ranma 1/2), but there are plenty that are just by themselves (Furi Kuri, Gunbuster, Gunsmith Cats, Video Girl Ai). Most that I've seen are either 6 or 13 eps. Although, there are a few that are only 4. i.e. Kenshin, and Vampire Princess Miyu. One reason that they are so short is because it usually deals with only one plot. The animators don't have a weekly deadline like they do for a series. Therefore they don't have to make filler episodes. The also have more time to make it look better visually. That is why OVA's are usually higher quality animation. (at least that's what I think)

Now, to answer the original question. I've actually never thought about which I like best. I'd say OVA's. They're right in the middle in terms of length and quality.

For AMVs I like movies better for the most part because the whole process is easier and the animation is usually much better, which makes for better flow. However, that really only applies to action AMV's, the most dramatic AMV's I've seen are always from series (most of them are based on specific characters).
The best effects are the ones you don't notice.
