DVD+R fell short of its hype, DVD-R has as much player support as +R and is the better choice

Agreed. Watching a DVD-R I burned myself right now. Even the $60 Apex DVD players at Wal*Mart can play these discs (or so my customers tell me).

dvd roms cost like < 50 bux nowadays

hehe yeah, dvds so far are like zip discs... nice drives but the media $$ 'd rape ya'... I'd get myself a 24/96 soundcard (probly Audigy since that's the only one that can play DVD-A...) and maybe Logitech 4.1s. HBBDay btw ;-p

less of coarse you don't even have a cdr... I'd keep with svcds for amv distros... less you fansub or sumthin...

oh wait... I thought you meant dvd roms as in media, not dvd roms as in drives... so solly... yeah I dun think the media costs $50 any more... maybe 20 and don't expect it to lower much if RIAA has anything to do with it (and RIAA let cds slip but not vcr tapes so you can just look at inferior tape prices versus cds to get a glimpse of the future... dam RIAA)

DVD+R/RW is the authoring version, where you can burn DVDs to watch in a DVD player. DVD-R/RWs are the General type, where you can actually burn files to a DVD, for example a backup of your hard drive. You can never get a DVD-R disk mixed up with a DVD+R burner, otherwise you risk destroying the disk and the drive.

Sony has all of this covered with its DRU-500A drive. It's supposed to burn all DVD types: + and -, R and RW. It does CDR/RW, too. They are hard to get; supplies are limited. But Mwave has them ($345):

A friend of mine saw it (DRU-500A) at CompUSA a few days ago for $350. And Dell has it for $338.

One nice thing about this drive is that it writes DVD-R at 4X instead of the 2x that all the other units do. Or so they claim.

Sony takes the risk out of buying a DVD recorder by bringing all the
popular formats into a single drive. The amazing new DRU-500A burns
DVD-R/-RW, DVD+RW/+R, and even CD-R/CD-RW discs.* Internal EIDE
drive includes an impressive, industry standard software bundle and is
compatible with Windows® 98SE/2000, Windows ME and Windows XP
operating systems. * DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs recorded on this drive
may not play back on some older or entry-level DVD systems. The write-
once DVD+R or DVD-R discs are more compatible for interchange with
other DVD systems. Please record responsibly. Before copying anything
onto a CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+R or DVD+RW, please be sure you are not
violating copyright laws.
