Best Buy's least expensive drive capable of DVD-ROM writing is $299.99.

Memorex

Universal BUSlink

I hope the URLs work... they worked for me in preview.

Anyone else find better prices than these?

Pioneer 2x DVD-R/RW Drive: Price: $190
SWEET!
you see, its my birthday today, and all in all I should have upward of $250 total earnings. Instead of any small gifts this year I'm just going to put all the money together and get something good like
A. good computer speakers (2.1 or 5.1 + new sound card)
B. new hdd (40gb is never enuff)
C. pda (portable movies, amv watching in study hall)
D. dvd-r (no more damned SVCDs)

I'm thinking about going for the dvd-r since it provides part of the functionality of B and would also eventually pay itself off >]

Yep, you're right. DVD-ROM is play-only.

Won't bother with writable DVD discs until I know I've got a home player capable of using those. :o

no, but this is a good computer! it's extremely fast compared to my old computer i stuck gum in...and then kinda whacked from time to time so it'd work properly. and it came with movie making software so can't really complain.

You guys have to be careful on which type of burner you get. There are DVD+R/RWs, and there are DVD-R/RWs. DVD+R/RW is the authoring version, where you can burn DVDs to watch in a DVD player. DVD-R/RWs are the General type, where you can actually burn files to a DVD, for example a backup of your hard drive. You can never get a DVD-R disk mixed up with a DVD+R burner, otherwise you risk destroying the disk and the drive.
