In theory, he was supposed to have this Great Ability yet we never see him use it; therefore Naruto is nothing but a Cartoon.

ya know I was thinking that.

but what I think they're getting at is, naruto isn't "out-there" with the fanservice, because its portrayed more like a cartoon than anything else.

my take, anyway.

Fanservice is rarely a pain, it depends precisely on what is shown though.

Ranma (girl form) butt naked is as erotic as your little sister's Barbie doll with nothing on. I mean, look at Ranma (girl form) naked, now look at the Barbie doll with nothing on. Does either turn you on?
For those that said yes, I congratulate you on your interesting imagination, and I also worry that you haven't had any real sex yet :)

Panty shots. Hmm does a girl's underwear really excite you that much?
Ever notice, that a girl's underwear likely covers her more, and more efficiently than the bottoms of a girl's bikini swimsuit?
Sure you're not supposed to see her undies, and a swimsuit is publicly acceptable.
But when you consider panties likely don't require shaving nearly as much as the bikini, and in plenty of cases the girl might even be wearing a rather daring bikini too.
Thus, seeing panties briefly is hardly worth the alarm. Hey, if you go to a local clothing store you can see women in underwear all over the lingerie section of women's clothing eh. It's not a tragedy to see a woman with nothing on but her underwear.

But, I think we can agree that Najica is silly as hell for panty shots. That's not fanservice :) that's beating a joke to death :)

Intense sexual inuendo is another matter. It's not required to actually SEE anything happening, or body parts not normally permitted. It's enough it's been made clear what's going on.
Been watching They Are My Noble Masters, and I must say, this show is attempting to cram every single cliche into every single episode. The whole show is essentially fanservice to a point.

But funny is always funny. And I doubt anyone too young, is going to actually know why someone old enough is laughing at what they are laughing at. So, if you have to explain something in an anime, chances are you don't need to explain it either.
Why tell them something they are not old enough to know about? Anime can be multi age group if done properly.

I usually only have a problem with people that have a problem with anime for fanservice. They are likely harbouring sexual hang ups, and that's their problem really not mine.

My thoughts on random shows:

Amaenaideyo!!: This is basically a softcore hentai disguised as a real show.

Ikkitousen: Too much fanservice. But then again, there's not much else going for this show. It's entire premise revolves around half-naked chicks fighting.

Rosario + Vampire: Unnecessary fanservice. It's a harem, so naturally there's going to be bouncing and stuff, but too many pantyshots distracts from any other kind of humor/plot it might have had.

They Are My Noble Masters: It has a lot of fanservice, but it's a maid/butler show. It wouldn't be the same without the fanservice it has.

Grenadier: A good balance. For those who want it, the fanservice is there. For those that don't, it's not too distracting.

lestheanimesarge, I agree with you for the most part, but I like my occasional panty-shot. (eiken is still way to much for my tastes though)

"If ya have to explain it, you don't need to" thats my motto.

But like others might have mentioned, I really hate when someone will bash a show, just for being a bit perverted. If you don't like it, you control yourself, don't watch!
I really despise it when someone will sit over your shoulder watching something with you, and then tell you every five goddamn seconds, why the series, or how the series, could be better, or how much it sucked, ect. DON"T FUCKING WATCH IT!! LET ME!!!

RAWR!!!

Anyway, shows like naruto, and inuyasha, ect. don't really need fanservice in my opinion, because their storylines don't call for it, ya know?

A show with maids and college girls, you expect to see some there, but not 12 year old ninjas, ya know?
Everything came from nothing, therefore everything is nothing.

There's nothing to worry about.

That was fanservice for the sake of humor, not fanservice for the sake of horny males.

middle school boys seeing (mostly) naked girls on deh teevee won't see it for the humor.

76, you might have assumed I had trouble with panty shots :)

I don't actually. Although occasionally with shows like Najica, it's a little like telling the same joke too often :)

But nope, I have no trouble.

I have no trouble with nudity in anime, although some stuff seems out of place, almost like it was forced.

As long as the anime is good on it's own merits, I couldn't care less about the fanservice.

Eh, I guess you're right. But when my 12 year old brother saw that I remember him just laughing his rear off.

I remember seeing nude shots twice in Monster. They were shown when the characters were entering a brother, but c'mon, was it really necessary?

I guess it was for realism, not arousal.
Monster was a show full of prostitutes. It would be unrealistic not to have nudity.

What is the definition of fanservice? Shinobu crying holding her stuffed animal is erotic to some us. I support all fanservice if you actually care about it go dig a hole and stick your face in it.

In a serious semi-serious anime I like fanservice when it's subtle. When it interferes with character development or plot, then it's too much. In comedy, if it's funny. (For example, My Noble Masters, ha ha oh wow)
