Why I like YUV over RGB /// NOT FOR DIALUP USERS

Postby grayplague » Wed Nov 06, 2002 11:03 pm

The pics on the left are from XviD encodes done YUV->RGB->YUV.

The pics on the right are from XviD encodes done YUV->YUV

Aren't they more purdy on the right. :shock:

There's some pixellation on Kenshin's blade, and the frames need to be clipped. It looks trashy.

Naw, I'm just being an ass. ;)

I've been trying to decipher the new Guide's instructions for encoding an AVI with XviD. I've been using TMPEGEnc to make MPEGS, and I like MPEGS since they are so easily compatible and don't need extra crap to watch them, but I'm attracted to the small size of XviD AVIs.

Small files + good picture quality = fuck yes

I know return you to your regularly scheduled forum browsing, already in progress

Are there any popular editing programs that edit in YUV?

I know, I know: it's not popular, and you guys are getting damned tired of seeing that goddamned URL. But, hey, it DOES edit in YUV :P

yeah but what kind of effects can you do with it? Cuz I know from a programming standpoint making special effects is hella hard to do in yuv as opposed to rgb
I'm surprised there was that much of a difference in the pictures though :O

actually Im talking about after the editing is done. All those screen caps where taken after the editing in premiere, and just compressed to xvid in different manners.

what i should have said was:

left ones: YUV->RGB(premiere)->YUV->RGB->YUV(scr cap)
right ones: YUV->RGB(premiere)->YUV->YUV(scr cap)

even with the initial RGB conversion in premiere, by eliminating a second one, the quality, and color, is greatly improved.

Those pictures are excellent, they really do a good job showing the difference.

If it were me, I'd think this fits better in General video, rather than off topic, as it seems very relevant to obtaining the best possible results for one's amv's.

I'm lucky I saw this, as I rarely come into the OT forums.

I can't think of any fundamental block that would prevent you from doing something in RGB colorspace but not in YUV colorspace.

An easy way out would just be to provide an RGB <-> YUV conversion interface. It's obviously not the ideal thing to do, but if you have enough bits per channel to work with, you can minimize the damage done.

From what I've read of the Cinelerra compositing engine source, I believe that Cinelerra does some of this to simplify things, using YUV/YUVA/RGB/RGBA with either 8 or 16 bits per channel for an internal colormodel, depending on what the user selects.

The programming difficulties in doing some things in YUV space are that in order to calculate an actual color value, you have to internally convert to RGB sometimes anyways. Some things work better in YUV, some things work better in RGB. In theory almost anything can be done in either, but the mathematical simplicity of RGB is far better for certain operations. Then again, having the luminance (the Y channel) already there for you makes other things really easy (like changing say, the brightness :))

And a note about RGB<->YUV conversions - the loss of video quality is an exponential function. I.e. every time you convert back and forth you lose MORE data than you dude the previous time. So every single color conversion that you can prevent is a definate benefit.

That's why I'm really excited about AVISynth 2.5 - native YV12 colorspace! Now THAT'S super-cool.

Question: did Rudiak-Gould really drop off the face of the Earth? Who's working on the new AVISynth improvements?
