Should we consider The Boondocks or Avatar:TLA to be anime?

Hi Guys, back at last...

I think we are going at this argument all wrong:
Isn't this about how not we'd persive a cartoons from other counrties, its about weather or not we can use them on this site, really? I mean I have watched every ep of Pokemon (yes all ten seasons) AND Avatar AND Naruto(season 1 and 2) AND Bleach to date, and I think the styles of animation used look quite simular. They also match quite well in plot quality, and in animation detail. What should it matter WHERE cartoons come from??

If it goes well with muisc then shouldn't that be enough to allow it to be used here. i saw a decent AMV based on Avatar which was put quite well to "prodigy - firestarter"(mis-spelled). Really good, and very enjoyable to watch. I watched AMV Hell 0 through 4 and saw lots of Naruto clips, again very well timed and clever.

I cant make AVMs (i know this...i tried) but even if i could, i would use Avatar over Naruto or even Bleach any day because of its style. It mainly humor and fighting with "powers". Isnt that what Naruto or Bleach is? Why should Avatar be singled out cause it looks different even though it as good as the others?

Seriously, this is racism - of sorts. Just because it came from a different country dosent mean it not "Anime" it just got a pinch of Western styling, but then hasn't other "Anime"? Take Hellsing for example - its about a different culture, in a different country (my home) and has very Western ideas yet it is still called "Anime". Yet Avatar is set god-knows-where and has four distinct cultures all of which can some way be related to other coutries around the globe. Yet the content and detail of both cartoons are simular, they have come to be classed as two different types of cartoon. Surely a American made Japanse Style animation can be called "anime" same with YuGiOh or Pokemon (eww) or even Digimon (arghh!!)?

So what does it come to really?
- Is it the right style?
- Made by the right county?
- Made the right artists?

Surly if Koshi Rikdo (all hail) moved to UK and started to make an anime which was simular to Excel Saga (or others) in his animation style and Plot humor would it be called "anime"... I wonder....

Is really any guide-lines to make anime? Any real base outline from which it is made? Some people will say Anime is for kids, others (Like ourselves) will say anime is for anyone, so isn't it to be said that anime has age problems, too? Pokemon is for kids? Hellsing Ultimate is for adults? NO! i still watch every pokemon ep to date AND Hellsing Ultimate and im 20y.o.! My lil bro is 14 and watches them both too. Anime is for everyone and anything can be classed as anime so long they all use simular styles. How about "Dora the Explorer"? Is that Anime?
What about Ben10 or TeenTitans?? Are these not just other forms of the Anime style which has been adopted by American artists because it is better?

"Initially Produced by a Japanese company for a primarily Japanese audience"

Art style, the race / ethnicity / gender / sexual orientation / etc. of the artists, and story have nothing to do with it AT ALL as far as this site is concerned. If the Simpsons met the above standard they would be anime too. As far as the org is concerned, this is the only standard. You can disagree with that all you want and it's not going to do any difference. If you would like to make another site... say "animelikemusicvideos.org" then feel free to do so.

I'm honestly surprised this thread is still unlocked.

haven't bothered to read everyone's post so If I'm repeating someone I'm sorry.

Can't give my opinion on the boondocks.

but for avatar I do have an opinion.
Some say Avatar "Avatar blurs the line between anime and (US) domestic cartoons until it becomes irrelevant" (http://www.scifi.com/sfw/anime/sfw12366.html)

In addition, Avatar has many features of anime such as having a different color palette from other animated shows

Avatar creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino said this
"The best anime balances great action sequences with humor and emotion, something we try to do on Avatar. We love all the films of Hayao Miyazaki, especially Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. Both movies deal with spirituality and the environment in an entertaining way. Also, there's a lot of great animation."

The Director, Giancarlo Volpe, told the staff to buy Fooly Cooly and watch every episode.

So Avatar does have Anime influence and, in my opinion, deserves as much praise as many other anime out there.

HOWEVER!!! we can't call something anime simply from it's influences or saying it's as good as anime. Anime is from Japan or originated in Japan. Avatar is not.

I love avatar and think it deserves to be praised and talked about as much as shows like fooly cooly, full metal alchemist, etc. But it can't be called anime.

No, actually this thread needs to die. Boondocks and Avatar are not anime. It is that simple. No matter how many times you ask, the answer will always be NO.

Lock this.
