Well, you need video. If you don't have a DVD-Rom your only other choices are capture with your video card (but that takes a special card, if you have it you would know you have it), or you can download clips off teh internet (bad quality though). I would recomend getting a dvd-rom drive if you can afford it.
They should run under $30 for a reasonably good product.

No one is going to tell ou how to do that. Either figure out how to capture it or rip dvds.

your name contains cheese backwards so I shall aid
first read up on video in general and try to get an understanding of it all (ermacs guide is a good starting point, at least the parts about video basics) then read sommore on other things until you gain a good understanding of codecs, formats, containers etc and basic video tech.
In time you'll learn all you'd ever need to know. If you don't want to spend the time learning then video editing is not for you :/
there are plenty of good links floating around http://www.doom9.org
learn well and you shall triumph :]

It's a pain. You (normally) have to take the clips that you have gathered and convert them into a common format that can be edited with whatever software you have. But you should do what Zarxrax says and rip the dvds. Get a dvd-rom :D .

It's not that hard to learn....i've been at it for a couple of months now and i still haven't made a genuine video...

Mess around...that's how you usually learn cool stuff, or at least, that's how i learn. BUt that's not for everyone, especially if you have expensive equip.

Read Quu's guide on getting video game footage.

This is not a $FREE$ hobby, it takes money. If you don't have money, you're not going to make a decent amv.

You need money for :

A Computer(hopefully it's a good one)
Anime Source (DVDs! VHS Tape)
Soundtrack Source(CDs)

Now you can get FREE anime off of the intarweb. All of this anime is geared towards otaku-fans, who want the lastest stuff out, or hax0rz crooks who like to steal their anime. The thing almost every ripped any episode out there is subtitled, dubs are rare and far-between. Making a video that uses hard-subbed footage is NOT fun and if you leave them in or chop them out or have to compromise on using scenes that work, but have subs, or a scene that kinda doesn't work right, but atleast it doesn't have subs, you're going to screw up the video.

So:

A)Get reading the guides and as much info as you can.
B)Get money,
C)Get Computer
D)Get Anime
E)Get a music CD.

Then you can make a AMV.

We're here trying to make people make better videos, we don't want to be the knowledge bank for someones nickel'd and dimed piece of shit.

Dude, do you not get it :O

Use windows movie maker, it comes with windows Me/XP. If you don't have that version of windows you will need to purchase a editing program. Windows Movie Maker sucks however.

DVD Drive costs money as well.

i dont agree, it doesn't always cost lots of money. i have barely spent any money on amv making at all (cheapskate!) and mine are pretty succesfull!
if u want a free program to make videos try looking for videdit, its easy to use and it very rarely has any errors although there are no special effects or anythin.
