And what would you recommend for the non audiophiles that are only listening to < 192kbps MP3 and people on bad mics from game or vent servers?

(not saying i'm looking for anything - just asking if the best is necessary if you're not going to be making use of it)

I hear Bose makes pretty sweet headphones, they boast the best in the business. I've never tried them so i can't say, but that's a big boast. They should be pretty good. I think. Maybe.

Bose is horseshit.

Bose puts a lot of sparkle in their tweeters to make people think its high quality. They really really REALLY doctor the sound, so much so that its their selling point. They helped make that whole "those speakers are SO SMALL but sound SO GOOD!" movement what it is today. Its mainly marketing aimed at women who don't like big speakers because they "don't match the bookcase". Compressed, sugary sound.

Bose = :down:

You want your headphones to be relatively flat sounding because your ear is RIGHT THERE. You don't need to mess with the signal.

I have shown this quote to Every Woman in my family who kept trying to give me a Bose, I thank you. And thanx for the link from before :up:

I am no audiophile, but I'm glad you posted this because you're right, Bose is awful. In fact, they're some of the worst speakers you can buy.

I won't go into all the technical details, but with my background in EE (well my undergrad) and my friends doing Ph. D's in Signal Processing, I can tell you that basically Bose Speakers OMIT a large portion of the frequency domain. The part that's omitted is...USED IN MOST MUSIC TODAY -_-;. It's not just some random frequencies.

Also related, if you look up Bose's finances, ~50% of their money goes into NON-TECHNICAL things. In particular, MARKETING. Ever wonder why people are buying Bose or everyone says they're great? Because of their marketing.

It's actually a really good example of good marketing to be honest. Marketing an inferior product as superior and convincing a large percentage of the population otherwise.

If you're really serious about headphones, go to headfi.org and check the forums out for information (and a reliable secondhand forum). Good value headphones are Sennheiser HD-580 (great soundstage), but if you have some money to spend and value your music, Grado is really a good brand (I got two pair of them), but not everybody loves them as they sound "different". AKGs is also a good brand, but I actually never got a listen on them.

But high-end headphones are 99% open-airs, so that means that you can't wear them outside or when people are are around and don't like to hear your music (softly).
