Getting the output to look right in Premiere cs3...

Postby dazza1008 » Sat Nov 10, 2007 9:07 pm

I'm new at video formats and the like (plus premiere), and would really appreciate some help ^^;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

My raws are from 704 x 396 DivX files converted to HuffYUV using virtualdub.

Now in Premiere there's an annoying black space around the video. It seems to squish the video when I export it plus there's that black space, and I don't want anything other than the video size of the original raws.

I've been fiddling around with settings with saving - if I save with Microsoft DV avi, I can't adjust the settings of the output video size. If I save with Microsoft AVI, I can adjust the output video size, but it doesn't look right.

Do I need to somehow zoom or stretch the original file before exporting, or is the solution in the way I export?

Many thanks.

screenshot of your import and export settings as well as some screens of this "squish", if you would.

No worries! X3 And you're right, screenshots are easier.

My Premiere workspace. As you can see, the input video is fine, but it doesn't look the same on the right. (preview pane???)

Settings 1 (I usually fiddle around with these by pressing the "settings" button after I select "export" from the file menu)

Settings 2

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee16 ... Player.jpg
The way the source HuffYUV file looks in VLC player. That's what I want the output to be.

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee16 ... format.jpg
The way it appears after I export it. It looks more squished from the sides than it does in the preview pane in CS3.

Thanks for your help!

Those are your export settings... Your project settings should match what your source resolution if you don't want the extra black space. Also, your squished video is because your PAR is set to 1.2 and you're viewing it on a computer monitor with a PAR of 1.0.

first off I'd suggest doing it as a Microsoft AVI instead of DV AVI, and then changing the frame size to match the source footage, and changing Pixel Aspect Ratio to Square Pixels (1.0)

also, just as an aside, should probably change the Data Rate/Recompress: to Always instead of maintain data rate

Thanks! I was a bit unsure of what to do - but then I did a new project, selected the "custom settings" tab instead of "load preset", changed editing mode to desktop, timebase to 23.976fps, frame size to 704x396, PAR to square 1.0, fields to progressive, display format to 24fps timecode (not sure exactly what this does, but I assume it's because my source is 23.976, so playback is 24fps????)

Now my preview pane looks exactly like the source image.

In Adobe's help file there's something like you can't change these settings after you create the project, so I'm glad I set it up correctly before putting time into it. I don't know if there's a way to rectify it if it isn't set up correctly. (I was playing around with the pixel aspect ratios, but the black border always seemed to be there). It is possible to stretch the original picture, but it seems better to set it up first.

Thanks, that was very useful too - I can't use DV AVI because it won't let me save at the original PAR.
And I'm guessing the "always" makes the file size smaller. (actually it can't be - I saved one either way and they are the same file size)

There's no interlacing artifacts, thank heavens (I don't know what happened, but I set PAR to square without fixing up the other stuff, it was on NTSC instead of desktop, and interlacing occurred, even though the source was progressive 0_0 )

Thanks! You're both directly responsible for another AMV with a Britney Spears soundtrack.

X3 I was hoping you wouldn't look at the soundtrack title in the screencaps, because I really needed the help. ^^

Have you Read ErMaC & AbsoluteDestiny's Friendly AMV Guides? Preprocessing to the framerate you want to use (24fps is suggested) is a lot easier.

I have, actually, but thanks. If I hadn't read it I wouldn't even have recognised an interlaced frame. I wasn't sure if that was preprocessing. (and why wouldn't it go to 23.976? Then again... 24 is fine... unless every notch was .999 of a second)
Anyway, the thing saves. I'm happy. ^^
