MPC and .wmv files

Postby CrackTheSky » Thu Nov 08, 2007 12:01 am

Does MPC just hate .wmv files or something? I changed a setting in my Options and checked the box next to "Windows Media File" under the Formats tab, and while that lets MPC play .wmvs SOMEtimes, other times I'll open a video that worked fine once and all I'll see is a black or grey screen. So, instead I have to use Real Player to play my .wmvs.

Is there any way to fix this? (This probably has something to do with FFDshow or something, right?)

I used to have a problem with wmv files in MPC, but I don't remember if it was the same one. I eventually figured out that it had to do with which version of the codec was used to encode the file–all those done with wmv 8 or 9 wouldn't play.

The solution was simply to go get the proper codec on M$'s website. I don't have the link, but it shouldn't be hard to find.

How is ffdshow set up (and how old is it)? Which WMV format is the video in?

I try to keep up with the latest ffdshow-tryouts build, and have WMV1/7, WMV2/8, WMV/9, and WVC1 all set to libavcodec, and there's not any time worth noting that I've had problems with it not decoding properly. I don't, however, have Windows Media files associated with MPC, but do use MPC to play them out of habit and because seeking actually works like it should there.

Also, under Options->Tweaks, is MPC set to use the WM ASF Reader or not? On mine it is enabled (which I believe is the default).

That seems to have been the problem, dunno why I didn't think of that beforehand. Everything looks to be working fine now, thank you for the help!

Actually, my Real Player never pesters me with ads or anything, it's weird. It acts like a completely normal media player, and a pretty decent one at that (well, better than VLC, at any rate).

In all fairness, VLC is pretty sucky, it's only advantage is built-in codecs, and honestly, if you install your codecs cleanly and properly, you don't need something like VLC, because it'll work fine with most other players.

(Also, scanning in VLC blows chunks)

As for the topic itself, I've never had problems with .wmv in MPC, though .mpg used to fuck things up, so I'm assuming it's simply a codec compatability/version issue.

An advantage also shared by mplayer, which is also much more solid. The SMPlayer project provides a better GUI for it, too. I'm not sure what seeking is like in SMPlayer, though.

Going along with that, the main decoding core in VLC and mplayer is libavcodec itself, thus for most of the stuff that's 'built-in' to those two, pretty much all of it can also be achieved simply by installing ffdshow and configuring it to decode all the same formats. Both players have their splitters built-in, of course, and VLC can read ISO images (which is the functionality I use VLC for the most). The only thing is that both VLC and mplayer, last I checked, still don't render styled subtitles all that well, which means SSA/ASS subtitles look like crap.
