Powerful Music

Postby Akashio » Sun Oct 27, 2002 4:55 pm

Does anyone know of any POWERFUL music? What I mean by powerful is music that, to sound corny, touches you inside. The two I can think of off the top of my head are "Gravity of Love" by Enigma and "Still Fighting It" by Ben Folds.

Anybody know of any?

Kiss the rain, by Billy Myer and May it be, by Enya (soundtrack from Lord of the rings). I'm not really sure if that's your definition of powerfull music, but they certainly 'touch me inside'.

This is probably the 7th time I've mentioned it, but I can't help it: "The Other Side" by the Dismemberment Plan. To me, it's a song about recognizing that no relationship will be perfect and every relationship will have its hard times and rocky moments.

"Metamorphosis" by Phil Keaggy. Really nice acoustic instrumental.

"4 am" by Our Lady Peace. To me, it's about someone feeling ashamed about being unable to help another.

"Temporary Arms" by Finger Eleven. Really angsty song. :D I can greatly relate to it, in an abstract sort of way.

Some that jump to my mind at the moment are Don't Speak by No Doubt, Elephant Love Medley from Moulin Rouge, This Is Not My Life by Fastball, I Want to Come Over by Melissa Etheridge, Blue from Cowboy Bebop, and Smoke by Natalie Imbruglia.

although no one wants to acknowledge the existance of this man/his work, many of his pieces have touched me in many different ways, be it good or bad.

good ones being:

Silent Hill 2 - Promise
Silent Hill 2 - Theme of Laura
Silent Hill 2 - Overdose Delusion
Silent Hill 2 - Forest
Silent Hill 2 - Love Psalm
Silent Hill - Tears of Pain

bad ones:

Silent Hill 2 - Angel's Thanatos
Silent Hill 2 - Reverse Will (put the song into Adobe Premiere and set the audio to negative 100%. very freaky)
Silent Hill 2 - Magdalene

"Tears", "Say Anything", "Forever Love", "Endless Rain", "The Last Song"....ect. Pretty much any X-Japan ballad totally moves me to the point of tears, not to mention their harder songs like "Dahlia", "Kurenai", "Silent Jealousy", and THE ALMIGHTY "Art of Life" (29 mins)

"And All That Could Have Been"-Nine Inch Nails
"True Love Waits"-Radiohead
"Paranoid Android"-Radiohead
"Fake Plastic Trees"-
"Pink Spider"-hide
"Blue Sky Complex"-hide
"Ain't Afraid to Die"-Dir En Grey
"I of the Morning"-Smashing Pumpkins
"1979"-Smashing Pumpkins
"Tear"-Smashing Pumpkins
"Wonderwall"-Oasis
"Are You Sad"-Our Lady Peace
"Mess", "Selfless, Cold, and Composed", "Don't Change Your Plans For Me"-Ben Folds Five

Pretty much all the music I listen to touches me down somewhere.

"Zero Endorphine" by OOMPH!. Instrumentally awesome.
"God Wrote" by Project Pitchfork. A rather powerful song
"Save Me" and "My Sanctuary (Spent Sperm Mix)" by Pig are rather moving, if I do say so myself.
"Angel" by Type O Negative
"Plowed" by Sponge is a good one.
On the Japanese front, "Mouichido Kiss Shitakatta" by B'z has such a desperate sound to it, you can't help but feel something.
"Standing" by VNV Nation is sort of the same.

Hope those help.
I'm out...

"Thief" by Our Lady Peace
"World Of Two" by Cake
"Waitin' for a Superman" by the Flaming Lips
"With Every Light" by Smashing Pumpkins
"Song Without a Name" by VAST - something about that line: "this moment that we share will always...always slip away" and the way he says it...

Ah, Spike reminded me of two, and I got a few more:

Oasis - Acquiesce. GREAT song about friendship.

Oasis - Talk Tonight. Not sure what it's specifically about, but it's got some great lyrics. Nice mellow mood.

Aesop Rock - "No Regrets". One of the very small number of rap songs I like, by the only rap artist I liked enough to spend money on. It's about a girl who, throughout her life, communicates solely through her artwork, and it concludes with an inspiring moral.

Billy Joel - "It's Still Rock & Roll To Me". Cool song about the value of *not* keeping with the times. At least that's what I take it to mean.

Des'ree - "Crazy Maze". Probably my favorite female singer of all time. This one's about struggling through the hardships of life knowing that "light's at the end of the tunnel", though "the journey may be long".

Oh, if we're talking abotu Eminem, you should get 'Sing for the moment', that's one of his best songs ever, if not the best.

I understand what you mean. I've heard a lot of "powerful" music, but to answer your question I would have to say that it is the "EPIC" song that really touches my heart and soul. Characteristically longer than 8 minutes in length, these (usually) progressive/power metal songs are exceptionally orchestrated. The few I can name right now are:

Blind Guardian - A Night at the Opera
Symphony X - The Odyssey
Nightwish - Beauty of the Beast

And from what I've heard - Stratovarius' new album - Elements, Part I will have 5 epic songs. Damn! I can't wait to hear that!
