Off Site Avatar Question

Postby Clara Yuri Asaki » Fri Oct 25, 2002 11:53 pm

If I use an Off-Site Avatar, does it have to still comply with the 80x80 and 6kb rules? Just wondering, because it wouldn't take up space on the a-m-v.org computers. But of course, they might take longer to load when viewing posts than Avatars stored in a-m-v.org computers.

----------------

This is the Off-Site Avatar that I would like to use as opposed to the Stored one I have now.

I'm just asking if it would be OK to link this Pic to my Avatar instead of using my currently Stored one. Probably not, right? I just wanna make sure anyways.

Yeah, those rules are based on board loading time as well as Phpbboard requirements. I've seen places that exceed the limits and it takes forever for a page to load.

I see. That makes sence.

This other Forum does allow for Off-Site Avatars to be larger than 80x80 and 6kb, and it doesn't take that long to load at all. Well, maybe it's just my computer then.

Well, if the phpbboard or a-m-v.org MODs wanna test loading times for larger Avatars, they can try this Bebop Forum.

The 80x80 limit can be altered by the site configuration but, like sig banners, there is a reason for the size limitation.

Please respect the decision of the site owner in regards to these limitations.

I know the reasons.

That's why I didn't make Avatar ultimately huge. It does fit perfectly in the space for your Avatar on a post, and it isn't that big in file size either.

I just wonder if the Limitations should be reconsidered, because the speed and power of computers has changed tremendously since this site was first made, right? Or at least since phpbb first started. I wonder if all our computers would be able to handle a slight upgrade in Avatar and Sig Pic sizes now.

145x145 does fit perfectly in the Avatar space, width-wise.
300x80 for Sig pics wouldn't be so bad, either......

Oh well, my current Avatar and Sig are still cool anyways, so I'm not worried too much. I'm just wondering if it's time for alittle change.

Could you guys teach me how to use that link-of site thing for an avatar? I want to put one up on my Geocities site, but when I try the avatar thing, the pic doesn't appear on the site :? .

- You just type the name of the Pic exactly how you would with the [img]******[/img] code. Only, you don't type [img] or [/img].

- Make sure that the pic is still 80x80, Size < 6Kb, and a .JPG.

- If that doesn't work, just Private Message me with the address of the pic that you are trying to use and I'll be glad to find out.

You can't use teh Geocities .txt trick when trying to upload an avatar. And since using .jpg or .gif is blocked. in other words you can't use geocities, angelfire or any other service that blocks remote image linking. ='(

This limit was only imposed when the site moved over to this new board, which was something like... 3 months ago.

Anime Jedi, if the pic isn't going to work because of what bloodyfang said, you can give me the Pic that you want to link your Avatar to, and I'll be glad to put it on my web space. (which as you know from my "My New Avatar" thread, my Pics don't get blocked! ^_^ And we're all very glad they're not!)

I'm using CompuServe OurWorld for web space, by the way.

---------------------

Zarxrax, there must've been some limit not to different from the current limits when the site started... no? Well, I was just assuming that there was..... Well... ok... even if it was only 3 months ago..... Still, 80x80 jpgs are unnessicarily small compared to what we could be using now. I can understand a-m-v.org not wanting to store all these 30kb 145x145 jpgs on their own computers, but you should at least be able to use your own web space for your Avatar and just link it back here. It doesn't take but a second for even 56k PCs to load a 30kb .JPG.

Actually, the last forum didn't have avatars or sig pics available, it was all text and html based. When the site moved to the new forum, that's when the limits for pic size began. Also, one 30kb jpeg doesn't take long to load for us 56kers, but if 20-30 were on a page, that would really bog down people with slow connections and CPU power (like me =\ ) although I don't mind whenever they're those hot anime pics you always put up.

The limits are what they are, because... well you shouldn't really need anything more. The physical size limits are in place so that half the width of the screen doesnt get taken up because of someones worthless avatar pic. The filesize limit is there because people come here to read, not to download pics. For anyone still on a phone modem, the pics have an impact on performance.

I didn't say that they should be limitless in size, I just meant that it is probably time that the limits were loosen up a bit. At least going up to 85x85 or 90x90 Avatars or something.... Just to see if that really starts a problem.... and if it does, just go back to 80x80 then. And if it doesn't, keep it like that for awhile, then slowly raise it again, and see if that causes problems. And you could just keep doing that.

Avatar pics are far from worthless! Look at mine, it's Art!!!!! Avatars also give off a good idea of what the person who is talking is like. And it just makes the site look so much cooler!

As for Sig Pics, I see nothing wrong with 300x80. It would take the same amount of time as a 600x40.

When you read a Manga, are you just reading the words?

I use a regular 56k phone modem, and it doesn't take long at all to see those larger Avatars like my 145x145 one. Don't forget, Windows automatically partially saves all the Pics you see if you use Microsoft Internet Browser. Which saves alot time, because it doesn't have to fully reload the same pic everytime you change a post or something. It even works on really large pics. So, even for slower PCs, you'd only have to wait for a slightly longer loading time ONCE.

If you look closely, you'll notice that you've already stated your request and reasons. Now, if you look closely at how boards work, you'll also notice that only admins can change the avatar dimensions. If the admins choose not to change the avatar dimensions, there isn't much you can say to make them change their mind. If, on the other hand, they are going to change the avatar dimensions, then they're going to do it regardless of the number of times/passion with which you request it (although bugging them about it may make you a nuisance, and not help your cause any).

This board is about anime music videos, not about your supposed "art in the form of an avatar".

When you read a Manga, are you just reading the words?

Interesting point, except for one thing. This is not manga, nor are avatars. It's so dissimilar as to be uncomparable. The analogy doesn't work.

I know that they can change it whenever they want to.

I'm just saying that if the only reason why they are not changing it is because of possible problems with loading times, they should at least just experiment for a short amount of time and see what happens. And then just change it back to the current limits and decide if it really is necassary to go either way.

I'm not here for the Anime Music videos, I'm here to chat on the forums. So, Avatars are more of a part of my experience here than it would be for someone who is here for Anime Music videos. And I'm not the only one here just to chat. Actually, it seems that more people are here just to chat than those who are here for AMVs..... which is actually bad.

About the Manga thing. I meant that, sure, you could read a manga story without the drawings, right? Or have these forums with no Avatars. But that just wouldn't look right.
