mftoon how high should you go?

Postby Toshi.des » Wed Sep 12, 2007 3:32 am

I was comparing some clips with mftoon applied on them.

I used the original, 128, and 255 as comparisons and while I noticed a quite a difference from original to 128, I didn't notice that much from 128 to 255.

While I know it depends on how you want the clip to look and how bad or good quality the clip you have is there a certain range you should stick with? or is using a setting with mftoon at 255 fine?

Like normally with sharpening filters you would have to worry about over sharpening, but with this it doesn't seem to be that way, it's more like a bit of sharpening with a style of overlay.

i don't see any detrimental reason why you cant use 255 if it looks better then 128

Well here are the three versions I was comparing it to, and it doesn't seem to distort the third so I think I would be fine with 255 if it makes improvements but does it take up more processing power? cuz it took forever to encode once I started using mftoon, though I didn't actually time it to see if using it at 128 or 255 took longer.

mftoon (and all other functions/plugins by mf on the doom9 forums) is notorious for being really slow...I mean really really slow, slowing compression down to 3-9fps slow

as for the strength...that particular scene isn't the best for making your comparison
try picking a scene with a more natural light where you can clearly make out the colors.

if I can actually get mftoon or vmtoon working I'll show you the difference between 128 and 255

after some struggles I got it working again, but vmtoon still gives me weird diagonal lines all over my video...and fastlinedarken still turns everything green :/

the edges of the mftoon-ed shots are a known problem
you'll have to flip between tabs as fast as you can

I'm using mftoon v 0.54 included in the mt_masktools package

orginal clip

it's most noticeable around the fingers
