Convert MKV files

Postby Toshiyan » Sat Aug 25, 2007 7:10 pm

I am looking for a free mkv file converter, or a cheap one :P.

I was looking at river past video cleaner and it's demo seemed to work real well though it still compressed the video after it was converted. Also it's $30 which right not is a lot.

Is there a program that will allow me to convert mkv files to a files that premiere can read that isn't compressed? Since I don't want it compressed while being converted then being compressed again when I'm finished with the video.

also is VirtualDubMod a converting tool? i can't seem to figure out what it is.

I'm also interested in converting ogm files but that seems to be easier than mkv's.

Help appreciated.

ImageVirtual Dub is a single line finishing editor that allows you to visually see if your filtering is being done correctly instead of guessing how it will turn-out.

How about free: mkvtoolnix, or if the command line scares you there is: MkvExtractGUI

That will let you demux the streams into seperate files, then you can use VirtualDubMod (assuming the video stream is in an AVI) to "Fast Recompress" the video to Uncompressed (or whatever).

However, I should point out that this is a poor method of getting clips for AMVs (if that is what you are doing), you are better off getting the DVD and using that as your source.

:?: Comprehension question absent banana.

Do you mean: "Do I have to watch it encode"? If so, then no, there are a couple of checkboxes that stop the source and destination from being displayed during the encode (this will make it encode faster too), or you could just walk away from your computer.

wow sorry about that, I really should have reread my first sentence there, if you can call it a sentence :P.

Will virtual dub use all four cores of my quad core? if not would it be a problem doing other things while it's encoding?

Comprehension question absent banana.

Not sure, it has been a while since I have used it (I am a Mac user), but I seem to recall that it is thread based so it will probably depend upon the codec it is using - i.e. if the codec can use multiple cores then it will.

Not at all. The worst that can happen is that your computer may be a bit sluggish, and the encoding may take a little longer. But that is it.

Not sure,
nope; only as much processor power as it needs.

almost got it right ^_^ .. you can set the "Priority Setting" while it is Encoding to "low" and it will not interfere with anything else that you are doing at that time. Virtual Dub is not a resource-hog; it only uses what it needs.

I don't think he was worried if it would hog resources, but, rather, if it would effectively use what was there (as in all 4 cores) so everything would get done faster.

Ohh! .. umm, no! .. the timing with Virtual Dub's working profile would not move any faster with a Four Core Processor over a Dual Core. its step-by-step logic is simple "Fetch-Process-Send when its ready" architecture is not optimized twards any given Processor Design. As such, Virtual Dub would not know the difference in Processor Designs; it only looks for 3D-NOW and/or MMX capabilities.

Thanks guys for your help.

Though I am having issues after I installed all the programs that came with AMVapp.

I did have huffyuv and Combined Community Codec Pack previously installed. I took huffyuv off the installation from the list when it come up with "HuffYUV and Lagarith" though I don't know what CCCP contained. I've used it really for the past year or so since I can basically play any video I've wanted with it.

Though after installation of all the programs in AMVapp I can't view mp4 files only their audio, also Virtual dub says "WARNING: NOTHING TO OUTPUT BFRAME DECODED LAG".

Can you guys point to some tutorials on VirtualDub, cuz I don't have a clue where to start.

I did search under good for: "virtualdub convert .mkv" but i can't seem to get good results.[/url]

Pretty sure that could arise from an ffdshow conflict. Uninstall all copies of ffdshow you have and install one from here, preferably one of the nightly builds or at least the last stable beta from the beginning of August:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile ... _id=173941

The B-frame decoder lag is an XviD thing - it only appears on the first frame; otherwise the video is fine (just track forward a bit). It does mean you're using a deprecated version of XviD, though, as that warning doesn't appear with the newer 1.1.2 and 1.1.3 builds from Koepi - instead, it's replaced by a simple black frame.

Sheesh, July. This is what I get for only getting 5 hours of sleep.
