I never say I'm "[country]-an/ese/ish", I'm very careful about that... because I've never even been to most of the places my ancestors came from (except Ireland, and then only as a tourist), and culturally I'm as small-town America as you can get.

Neither am I multiracial, so this really isn't "my" thread O_o;

But regardless, my ancestors came from...
- southern Italy (Calabria), though there's reason to believe that the patrilineal line there came to Calabria from Albania (the name is really not Italian in origin, but no one's sure exactly where it DID come from)
- somewhere in Germany - that branch stayed in eastern Pennsylvania long enough that nobody knows where they came from before then (usually called "Pennsylvania Dutch")... I should trace that someday, though everyone in that family line is dead :/
- the French Alps area, Alsace-Lorraine
- County Cork, Ireland (when I finally saw Cork, I was struck by how much it looked like the city my great-grandfather and his father DID move to, here. ^_^; Odd.)

Pretty typical industrial-city turn-of-the-century mixture, all around. And I'm interested in how all these random people are connected through history, even though it IS a rather boring, "typical anglo" combination at first glance. Also the stories that come from it, like one of my two French ancestors being a young woman who died while her son (my great-grandfather) was still a child, and how her husband left the US and went back to Ireland to find a new wife with his six-year-old son in tow - then came back.

So see, it can be more than "I'm blah and blah and blah" :)

I'm Italian/Irish, a straight 50/50 mix.

I know practically nothing about my Irish ancestry. My grandfather was an orphan, and all he knew about himself and his brother was that they were a) Irish and b) *most likely* named Dooley.

My Italian heritage is a bit more varied. My great-grandfather fled Italy with my great-grandmother, they were escaping for two reasons. First, my great-grandmother was the daughter of a powerful "connected" man, and there was a contract on my great-grandfather for eloping with her. Second, he was an anarchist and Mussolini was imprisoning and killing all the anarchists. So they fled to America, where my great-grandfather made his money bootlegging gin.

I also claim my interest in editing and such from him, he made a home movie about his life (grealtly colorized I'm sure) with one of the first home movie cameras called "Gone with The Gin". We still have copies of it and we show it at the family reunion every 5 years. (Last one had over 300 people).

Half Chinese, half Taiwanese.

If my girlfriend and I ever had kids they'd be 1/4 Chinese, 1/4 Taiwanese, 1/4 Thai, and 1/4 mixed European (mostly Hungarian). They'd be awfully confused.
I have no idea how to use this new forum.

Though I have Spanish, German and English ancestors (a few generations back) and *lots* of Swiss ones, with a tad little bit of far, far, *far* family in Poland.

FRIESIAN!!

Postby Sub0 » Tue Jul 16, 2002 10:40 pm

ok you FORCED me! My momma was AZN/ Hawaiian (and she SWEARS she's Irish???) My poppa's German mostly, Friesian acturally. So that makes me one HELLUVA stud who don't care where he came from ;-p. I drop the Friesian part into random conversations cuz my last name is Fries (there's also a Friesland... yes, very cold and ruled by Batman freaks ;-p) but anyway.
