Revaluation of this hosting thingy...

Postby Gottaname » Tue Oct 22, 2002 1:02 am

I've dropped the idea of having it hosted on a personal server so I'm getting a US reseller's account. The account will go as follows:

$0 Setup Fee, USD$72 per year or USD$5 a month you get:

1GB Disk Space
4GB Monthly Bandwidth
DS-3/OC3 leased line Connection
FTP access
E-mail
Full access to SSI, SQL, PHP, PERL and CGI bin.
And other features such as Frontpage extensions and Real Audio and Video.

I'm sure this is more than enough for most AMV ppl, the free account will be less and of course limited to certain ppl but will go as follows:

200MB Disk Space
800MB Monthly Bandwidth
DS-3/OC3 leased line Connection
FTP access
Full access to SSI, SQL, PHP, PERL and CGI bin.
And other features such as Frontpage extensions and Real Audio and Video.
Presently eligible ppl are Sierra Lorna, Vlad G Phonert, CArnesen, Vegeta for President, Pie Row Maniac, Satori and nailz 1000. I was using the previous threads and I believe these ppl are geniunely in need of this space, 'cause if you can complain about it, then you don't need it.

4 Gig??!!!

Is that all???

I do that in a less than a day on the release day of new videos. SRV does about 15 gig a month now, even months after its initial release.

USD$17 per month which is USD$204

5GB Disk Space
20GB Monthly Bandwidth
All of the features of the accounts

Yeah, sorry - didnt mean to knock the service ^^;;

I'd personally be looking for a 60gig bandwidth host at least, but I'm sure your service would be useful to creators with less bandwidth than me ^_^;;

Well, for someone like me who is just starting out in the AMV world something like that sounds really good.

One thing though, if you pay $5 a month that comes out to a total of $60 per year, which would be less than what you charge per year :? So I'm thinking there must be a catch :) or not. But I am curious as to why you have it totaled that way.

P.S. I would be very interested in this once you get it up and running, for I am pretty much hostless right now, unless you include my p.o.s. geocites account with 15 MB of storage space :(

I only have a few videos, and I think I would go though 4 gig pretty fast.

Just devide how much bandwith by the size of your video. If it's 50 mbs, then that means it can be downloaded 80 times. In a month. Thats like less than 3 times a day.

However, look at it this way, that 960 people that get a copy of your video a year...

...Err, this is big talk from someone who is hosting it on his computer huh?

We all really apprecite you trying to set somthing up for people, but, its not really gonna be adequate (sp?) for AMV's.

HypeOdermic's AMVs alone pull down about 40-60Gb per month (depending on whether we have a realease that month), and we are by no means very popular. If your really interested in the bandwidth provision trade, look into a rack shack account.
Just my two cents, and please dont think Im ragging on you, as I do think what you are trying to do is a good thing ;)

Another service you might wanna look into is a company called Infinology. I have them as a host and they're pretty reliable. The service I have give me 9GB of space, 50GB of transfer/month, plus lots of other features I don't really use, for $6.95 a month (a special offer that seems to be on going...). If you wanna check out the special go to smartconsumers.infinology.com/secrethosting.html or just go to www.infinology.com (but the specials site is cheaper).

Errr....

Postby Gottaname » Tue Oct 22, 2002 7:41 pm

Well... I could use another kind of reseller, which is based off Singapore, and it runs off a direct link to Singapore One, here's some spam straight off the Singapore's government's website:

1-Net Singapore Pte Ltd, the broadband infrastructure provider of the nation's
broadband network - Singapore ONE, is a regional total IT service provider
offering broadband connectivity, managed hosting, IT outsourcing and
consulting services. It currently manages two telco-class Internet Data Centres
along with providing the Managed Network Services to large enterprises. It
also provides Managed Security, Streaming Media and Content Distribution
Network Services, Managed Bandwidth with Quality of Service, and regional
data storage services.

Since 1 Oct 2000, 1-Net Singapore has been a wholly owned subsidiary of
MediaCorp Group of Companies which is the largest and most established
broadcaster in Singapore with a full range of media businesses. For more
information, please visit our website http://www.1-net.com.sg/

Anyway, the webhoster is selling at 100MB, more expensive and smaller but it has 100% Guaranteed Unlimited Bandwidth Transfer and is built for Businesses with extremely high transfers and such so it may suit your needs. They also have two US data centres:

U.S. Data Center 1
We are connected to the Internet via 14 T-3/DS-3 lines (Each T3 provides the equivalent bandwidth of over 55 T1s) and a single huge FDDI connection in Washington, providing over 600mbps of total connectivity. We are 1 hop away from MAE-EAST, the largest Internet exchange in the U.S.

U.S. Data Center 2
We are connected to the Internet via multiple redundant and independant circuits to major bandwidth provider. The data center is equiped with BGP routing, fire suppression system, backup power generator, etc, providing you with peace of mind.

Singapore (Science Park Data Centre)
Your servers will be hosted in one of the best connected Internet Data Centers in the Asia-Pacific with massive investment in both network equipment, infrastructure and backbone connectivity to ensure that our customers' websites get the fastest accessible possible to their viewers.

The price will be something like this:

USD$72 per year which is around USD$6

200MB Disk Space
Unlimited Data Transfer
FTP Access
All Standard Features

But like I said, the space is smaller but you can rest assured that the unlimited transfer is worth the cost.

Hah!

Postby Gottaname » Tue Oct 22, 2002 7:58 pm

Crits are good, it will help me decide on which reseller to use, I may get both resellers if feed-back is good. And for christ-sake don't ask me whether the bandwidth is truly unlimited, it's runned by the Govt and it's their business to keep the connection Unlimited, or else I'll sue them.
