Even though I'm still very new at this, too, I'll see if I can help you.

You're absolutely right... Windows Movie Maker sux. It's good to get started making AMVs; I admit, I used it before. I also had the same problem with it crashing every five minutes, but then again something should have told me something when I made WinXP Pro crash in 15 minutes after installing it! ^_^

Now, the first thing you have to remember about using AVI and MPEG files is that they use codecs. Codec stands for "coder-decoder," which is a collection of commands that take a video in a small filesize and play it on your computer. Without codecs, a file would be upward of 500 megs for a 3-minute AMV. So, codecs are your friends.

Anyways, the first editing program you need to get (if you don't already have it) is VirtualDub. The best way to get it (and other programs) is download a file sharing program like Kazaa, Imesh, WinMX, etc. and search for it. VirtualDub allows you to open a file with almost any codec and strip audio, clip video segments, and other things that even I haven't found how to do yet.

The next thing to do is go to www.Divx.com and get the latest Divx version. Divx is a very popular codec that gives great video quality. The only downside that I have with it is that it's kind of tricky with editing, because the audio has a variable bit rate and doesn't sync well when editing. The only way that I get around it (you can use VirtualDub for this) is select the video I want to use, then strip the audio from the selection, and then clip the video and resync it later.

I hope this helps you out. Let me know if you still have any questions. Oh, and if any of this info seemed redundant.... sorry!

 Okay.... THAT'S IT!!!!

I hope the Mods are reading this. Ever since I joined this message board, every time I post something to either ask for help or answer someone else's question, all I ever get are snide remarks and criticism. All I was doing was trying to help out a newbie--LIKE MYSELF--and this is the thanks I get. If you want people to stick around and keep getting more visitors, treat people nicely. I wish something would be done about this!

Here's what you do.

Scroll all the way down on the forums until you come up to one called
Mod Drop Box (Below Off Topic).

If you have a problem, take it up with them.

Please guys...

Everytime you edit in DivX, God kills a kittne.
Please, think of the kittens.

Read the guides for pete's sake. DivX is BAD for editing with. Sheesh.

Trunks I would sympathize with your plight if you posted better info :/

heres what you do, calm down and dont take it personally. Too many people take stuff here personally and thats why it got so bad a week ago. Someone else recently screwed up COmpressor DEComressor as well which is the only reason Wolfwood went off. Besides, this is nothin, try posting on doom9 without incomplete knowledge and you'll make friends quick ;P
