wrong

avi is the most acceptable format.

My guess is you've got divx avis, which should still import fine. I've got no idea why you're having a problem with avi. Still,

If you can play your files in windows media player, then the answer to your question is mpeg. TMPEg2ENC on CQ 100% mpeg2 mode gets me ~ 300 mb / 30 minutes and was high enough quality for the one project where I needed to do this.

Get tmpeg2enc here: http://taif.selfip.com/AMVstuff/Tmpgenc12a.rar

When I had the problem with my viewing and editing video files, I have found converting software. It called VidLogo and there I easy can transform from any video to avi, wmv, mpeg and I haven't the same problem more.

I think that it's either - XviD or DX50... I'm using vegas, and as far as I tried - DivX files give both Video and Audio steams (though playback is way too slow) ; DX50 gives only audio Steam, same with XviD. And there is even possibility of having H264 footage, since now many FanSubbers are releasing H264 episodes to get a higher quality (though I haven't seen any .avi containers having H264,only those of .mkv had them..).

DX50 is the FOURCC used by several DivX 5.x versions. So you have problems with DivX too, maybe it depends on the version or how it's encoded if it works or not. Nonetheless, using DivX, XviD or other MPEG4 codecs for editing is always gambling on chances. Maybe in the near future it will change with the upcoming of AVCHD camcorders.

Meh,it doesn't really matter as long as you can find solution to your problem, like using lossless stuff.

To topic : You can just use FourCC Changer, and change both boxes to DIVX. I would show you how to do it,with screenshots and stuff, but I'm too lazy... Hope someone will explain how do that to you. And if you have lots of free space, and can't find a way to fill it with needless stuff, you can always try out using lossless codecs..
