The fading away of just one masked character should work,but you have to have two tracks - the top one, and the bottom are the same; so copy one and put it below the one you want. Then mask out the guy and have the top track(masked track) fade away.

1) Put your clip in the timeline
2) Copy it and paste it on a second track below
3) Mask the first track so only the character is showing
4) Mask the invert of the first track in the second track so the character is NOT showing
5) Put a fade out in the first track
6) Voila, you have your effect
