Whine, Clack, *Crash*

Post by Kionon » Wed Jun 27, 2007 8:34 pm

For the last few weeks, my PC has been doing a whine, clack, *crash* thing. Sometimes hours between, most of the time days between. It's happened about four or five times now. I have never experienced anything like this. The PC crashes and I am forced to reboot, but I lose no date, and seem to have no ill effects.

As yet, I have been unable to determine what is causing the whine. No fans are failing, I'm certain of this. The clacking thing has me worried, the last time I heard that, it was right before a severe harddrive failure that almost lost me Countdown (luckily I had auto-backup on, and so I did not).

On what I think is a related note, it seems to have started when I installed my new GeForce 5200, and I note that the heat sync is ridiculously hot (like touch it and you might as well have just touched the stove hot). This is the reason I think it falls under Video Hardware Help. Could my new card be overloading the rest of my computer?

How high-pitched is the whine? And how big is your Power Supply?

Pretty high pitched (higher than I can sing, sounded like and e above the staff in bass clef) and my power supply is roughly 10"x3"x2".

You did not specify:

Says it is 250 watts.

Since you mention the video card is new, the first thing i suspect is that it might be drawing more power than you power supply can handle. Does your documentation come with any wattage requirements? the official site for that series does not seem to =/

I thought I checked all of the requirements before buying the card...

I'm going to take it the computer apart tomorrow, clean it, and put it back together making sure nothing snagged or blocked or dirty etc.

Even though your video card isn't exactly a new top-of-the-line card, I think 250W is a bit low for you total system. I wish someone else with more experience in this area would post though... i don't want to lead you on a tangent. =/

250W does seem very low. I had the same sort of problems when I upgraded from a PCI ATi AIT 128 to an AGP ATi AIW 8500DV, and it turned out to be a power supply issue. Most of the online calculators I've tried for what I remember you saying your system has recommended an absolute minimum of just over 250W. You'd probably be best served by getting a larger PSU.

Don't forget, with PSUs it's not only the wattage, but the rails and make that are important. Need to make sure you have sufficient amperage on each rail. The PSU is sort of like the heart of the system, it is one of THE most important parts. Low quality PSUs can equal bangs and part deaths.
