My favorite line in ep.8:
"Ya can't! Tsundere hafta have twintails!" -Konata to Kagami on the subject of Kagami cutting her hair really short.
I think the chance of this series picking up off the cutting room floor here for USA sales is slim to none.

First off, there's just TOO MUCH JAPANESE CULTURE in it. [If you're versed in it, that's good, but the 'real' customers are most likely casual anime viewers who do NOT love this hobby enough to do research on it]

If any company was going to pull this off, they'd have to ad-lib it to fit an American audience and from what I've seen of the digisubs so far, IT CAN BE DONE, much to the chagrin of the people who want it in its 'original' form but suffice it to say, I'd LIKE to see how'd they'd make the joke humor in this anime fit for American culture, there's enough references here to cross INTO it to make it work.

Those of you high and mighty people who think it should stick to Japanese references must remember something, companies need to make a profit, not a loss, not break-even, profit. If people don't get it after watching/renting the first dvd, what do you think they'll tell their friends? dur, Lucky Star sux, not funny blah blah*

I think if they did make it for American culture gags for a USA audience, it'd be funnier actually. [indeed, the subtitled version can keep it's translation to the letter but to listen to a genuinely funny American version of this show would make it nice and rewatchable]

"Strength lies in action. Let the weak react to me..." - Kamahl, Pit Fighter from Magic: the Gathering
"That is a mistake many of my enemies make. They think before they act. I act before I think!" - Vortigern from Merlin ('98)

Pani Poni Dash has chock full Japanese cultural references, and that got licensed (by ADV of course). I can bet Kadokawa Pictures USA will bring this title over here in the future, and I bet that ADV will handle the entire production. I mean those ADVid notes will come in handy.

Episode 9 highlights:
The girls talk about blood-type personalities, then go to a website that tells you what type of sushi are you. Poor Konata...

The Twins and Konata go out to see a horror movie (much to Tsukasa's dismay). Kagami complains about Konata being late, but actually the Twins don't even notice that Kona-chan is already there.

After the movie, they head out to an all-you-can-eat cake place (yeah, more food humor). I laughed the hardest at this part.

Konata "helps" Miyuki apply her eyedrops. Hai, relax...
For the Lucky Channel portion,
They talk about Tsukasa. Akira tries to mention that Tsukasa looks like Akari from ToHeart, while Minoru frantically tries to stop her and has to resort to singing parts of Koi no Mikuru Densetsu (恋のミクル伝説; Mikuru Legend of Love), the SHnY ep. 1 Asahina Mikuru no bouken Episode 00 (朝比奈ミクルの冒険 Episode 00; The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina Episode 00) opening theme to drown out what she is saying.

And more violence from Akira. (Just how many cigarettes were in that ashtray?)
The end theme is Kogarashi ni Dakarete sung by Konata (Aya Hirano), previously performed by Kyoko Koizumi (aka. KyonKyon). Interesting fact: the song was covered by SpringS, the idol group that Aya was once a member of. Video here.

Episode 9... hmm have to say after episode 1 it's my least favourite... there was some good stuff here though.
hmm... have to say I enjoyed the blood types and the Sushi website. It was cute when the girls went to the buffet and were struggling to eat all their food... I think anyone who's gone to a Japanese style buffet (or even an american buffet) has had that happen. It's worse in the Japanese ones because their time limit; I was at a Sushi Bar and Korean BBQ place like that... luckily we were going in a huge group, so tables just swapped food to avoid getting caught with left overs.

The lucky channel is the funniest thing about this episode, but when isn't it. Akira's personality changes are great.
Obviously I agree... that this series would not do well in the US... only the true Japanophiles or people who have actually lived there would enjoy it and get all the jokes. But they could impro dub it like Samurai Pizza Cats or something. But there's enough that american anime fans should get, like the Gunbuster jokes, and the MMO humour... MMOs are the same no matter where you live.

A good example of a dub done right in this kinda situation is FLCL...I mean, there are tons and tons of Japanese references, but the dub is great because they keep a lot of them, but they also add some new (americanized) ones. Granted, Lucky Star and FLCL are way different, but the same kinda thing can apply.

Favorite ep 9 scene
Miyuki with the eyedrops..."Your face...it's scary..."
Ep was a little drab compared to some others, but still enjoyable. Also enjoyed the
Saw III reference...was thinking they were gonna maybe go see Grindhouse the way Konata was talking...I could totally see her digging some Grindhouse action.
Ok, I agree, episode 9 was kinda of meh. I guess the blood type and sushi personalities threw me off. And not to mention the baseball references and its relation to corporate sponsors was pretty foreign to me (I don't think we do the same here in the U.S.; can anyone shed some light on it?).

Episode 10 was hilarious to me especially:
- Tsukasa got a new cellphone, and she's getting far too addicted to it.

- HUGE reference of the Anime Tenchou commercials.

- And not to mention the Haruhi Suzumiya references. Konota even owns that Mikuru figurine and that poster with the girls in bunny suits.

- Was Konota's father sprouting stuff about Fate/stay night? I swear he said something about Rin and Sakura relationship (which I'm not saying anything since that's a spoiler of that series).

- Hahaha, the Hiiragi sisters tried to switch hairstyles. For some reason Kagami's hair reminded me of Chikane from Kannazuki no Miko and Tsukasa reminded me of Yumi from Marimite.

- This explains SO MUCH!!!

- You now know the idea of the concept of "tsundere" in Lucky Channel. :o
In the U.S. a team may have corperate sponsership (like how they sell the naming rights to their stadiums and the adds to broadcasters of their games and those billboards on the fields and whatnot), but in Japan, all the baseball teams are owned by companies. Newspapers, supermarket chains, vendign machine companies, they all completely own the teams, and when their teams do well they're known to offer specials to the public. MLB teams are mostly owned by very wealthy businessmen. Their private endevors and private business dealings (or however they made their millions) is independent from their ownership of the team.

Wasn't that already in one of the previous episodes? Still, Kagami and Tsukasa were just surprised, nothing sad.

For the record, last year's Japan Series was between the Nippon Ham Fighters (owned by Nippon Ham), and the Chunichi Dragons (owned by Chunichi Shinbun, a newspaper), which the Ham Fighters won.

In '05 the Chiba Lotte Marines (Lotte makes BlackBlack caffeine gum and has a huge retail presence as well, see here for more info won, and in '04 the Seibu Lions (Seibu has huge department stores and owns railway lines as well) took it home. I imagine there would be sales at the department stores when the Lions win.

Episode 11:

Konata + Dad moments are win.

The song they sing for the ending was AWESOME!
It's "Doraemon no Uta" from, obviously, Doraemon. :P
I'd have more but my computer's power supply is dead and currently, it's running on a borrowed one. :(
