Encoding for Upload

I took the suggestions of the members here and I reripped all my footage for my video using a Lagarith Lossless codec. However I have a very small hard drive (It's a 6 year old Computer) so about 95% of that footage had to be rendered emediately into WMV as I did not have enough HD space to hold it all. The result is still far better quality in the clips then anything I've seen before.

But I am concerned with using WMV. See, have Vegas 5 and using it for a while now but it doesn't seem to be able to render into Lagarith. I don't even see Xvid or DivX listed in the rendering Options. What should I do about this? Will WMV be OK to use?

My biggest concern is how the final render will look AFTER it's been uploaded on the website and then downloaded again. I did a little private test on youtube just out of curiousity and Youtube made it look like Crap. Yet it still looks great on my PC.

Can the wise and experienced members here offer some advice and suggestions, please?

Yeah I made a few more typos but what ever. There's no edit button....

I forgot to ask a question. Will uploading directly to a-m-v.org in WMV format change the viewing quality significantly from what I am seeing on my PC once some one else downloads and watches the video?

Not a Vegas user, so I'm not sure about exporting there, but you can always export as uncompressed or whatever lossless codec it will export with, then use Virtual Dub to compress it into whatever codec you want. (Virtual Dub is a free program that you can download. If you google it, I'm sure you can find it. I'm about to go to bed. lol) U-tube makes everything look like crap, and since we do only downloads here instead of streaming, whatever you see on your comp is what people will see when they download and watch your vid. (excluding monitor differences of course. :P) And on the forum, the preview button is your friend. *^_^*

Vegas WMV is really nice quality compared to other programs.... but what you should be doing is exporting lossless like wurpess said, then use virtualdub to compress to XVID...

if you export directly to xvid/divx in vegas the results are very very very scarry....

Thanks for the replies.

The problem here, though, is that Vegas 5 doesn't seem to allow a rendor into Lagarith lossless codec. It's not in the options drag down list of formats/codecs. Yet I DO have Lagarith installed and it shows up in Virtualdubmod.

Is there a plugin for Vegas 5 to rendor into Lagarith?

I do have the Mpeg plugin and it can do MPEG-1 and MPEG-2. Ultimately if I can figure this out (The lack of Lagarith problem) I'd like to end up with a couple different formats for the appropriate distribution. WMV, DivX, Xvid (which ever of those you guys suggest) and Mpeg-4 would be my preferred final compressions.

My end goal is to present it to both my fellow fans in the commuity to enjoy and you guys here and get some honest opinions to what I did right and wrong so I can get better. I'm passionate about my music and I'm passionate about my animated series so put 2 and 2 together and I have alot of fun, but I always want to do it justice. And if the codec quality stinks then it would be all for nought.

The video I'm doing is a Tribute Video to present the characters to a wide audience so it's important for me to get it right.

So basically in Vegas 5 I'm left with no way to render to Lagarith at the moment. I can render into .avi, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, or WMV-9. Most of the footage for editing is currently in WMV-9 format for HD space reasons.

Knowing the dellima of not having Lagarith in Vegas 5 at the moment, what do you suggest and how do you think I should go about this?

Again, thank you guys so much for your help!

Nevermind guys. I found a thread in the Other and Vegas forum that had a tutorial link that solved my problem. Thanks for your advise though! Now that the Lagarith thing is solved I should be able to use your suggestions and sail smoothly from this point.

Sorry for being such a newb.

I did have 2 more question while I'm here though, approximately How big a file size should I expect a 6 minute Lagarith AMV to be?

Assuming Lagarith compresses about twice as much as HuffYUV, i'd say the export would be a couple GB at most.
