VCA Livestream hosted by ngsilver

Post by ngsilver » Thu Jan 30, 2014 7:27 pm

Once again this year I plan to host a livestream of the VCA videos. I will only be streaming the Semi-finalists and Finalists. Due to the sheer number of videos available for nominations there just isn't enough time to really go through all of those. The schedule of viewing will be based on the VCA schedule, so the stream will be going on while each voting phase is happening. Like last year, I will split the categories up into sets of 5 (except the last day which will only be 4) of each category that you nominate videos rather then members. As the VCA schedule this year puts us on a Sun-Sat schedule for voting, and to allow 1 day for me to obtain all videos and setup the playlists and 1 day for everyone to put in their final votes after the streams are done, I will begin the streams on Monday and go through Fri. (Praise be the admins for making a much easier schedule this time around)

All are welcome to join in and watch the videos during this time. It's a great way to see every video for those who haven't seen them yet as well as a chance to chat and enjoy the company of fellow viewers and discuss things about each video in the process. I had a blast the past few years doing this.

Each stream will start at 8pm EST (1am GMT/UTC the next day) and go until that night's list of videos is finished. Based on the past few years info, there were 20 videos in each category for the Semi's and 5 in the Finals. With 5 categories each night, the average playtime wound up be aprox 6 hours for the Semi's and aprox 2.5 hours for the Finals, except for the last night with the MEPs, which went much longer. Knowing that not everyone will be available during these hours once the stream finishes I will turn on auto-pilot with the recorded version of that night's stream and let that repeat until the next stream begins. The actual scheduled dates and which categories will play on those dates can be found below. I can't give accurate times for when each category will begin as video lengths vary, but based on an average of 3 min per video, at 20 videos, a category will take aprox 60 mins to play through, give or take 20 more mins generally for the semis and 15 mins to play through each category in the finals.

I will also be doing a special wrap up stream on the final voting day for the finals where I will list my personal picks for each category. These may not even include videos that were in the semi's let alone the finals in each category. It's basically my personal bests from the year out of all the videos I've seen.

I have an FAQ section below the stream schedule. If you have a question that isn't answered there feel free to ask and I'll try my best to give you a good answer.

FAQs:

In what order will you be playing the videos?
Alphabetically by category. So we start with the first category based on the ABC sort and then the first video based on the ABC sort.

How will you be sorting these videos? What is the key you will sort by?
Videos will be sorted by video title. This should hopefully keep 2 videos by the same editor from playing back-to-back.

How do we know what each video is when it plays?
There is a page you can go to in order to see which video is playing at any specific time for any of my streams here: http://ngsilver.myvnc.com:8080/player/
Also, if you watch the stream from the twiamvs website link rather then directly on livestream you can see what specific video is playing as well.

How are you going to name each video so we know what to vote for?
As the org doesn't rename videos, and many editors name their uploads in odd ways, videos will be re-named according to the following naming scheme: [category] Video Title - Editor . ext

If a video is in multiple categories in a night, will that video only be played once to save on time and sanity?
No. Each category will be played in it's entirety. So if a video is in all 5 categories for a night it will be played 5 times that night, wherever it lands in the alphabetical order of each category as they play.

You've gotta be kidding me.... Stupid lysdexia and old calendar on my wall. The first day of streaming was suppose to be on the 17th, on Monday (technically today) and not on the 16th. How did I miss that?!?!??! I'll update the dates to actually coincide with real dates planned.

However, I have to cancel the first 2 nights of the semi's at least. If you saw my Tekko post you will know that I lack internets right now thanks to comcrap being stupid and running the cable from my node to the building outside without any conduit or insulation so that the cable is out in the open and susceptible to the weather.... so yeah... it's being re-run on Tuesday morning which should fix the problem. Once I have internet back I will have to download all the entries, which I was going to do today (the 16th) and rename and categorize everything, which will take the extra day on Tuesday. This of course means we can start back up on Wed, with wed's schedule but will be missing out on Mon and Tues in the semis.

Murphey's law would say this would have to happen now....

Unfortunately, the wifi hotspot I have from work isn't fast enough and reliable enough to support a stream, nor do I currently have a wifi receiver to plug into my streaming system (I run an almost exclusively a hard wired home, though I did order one from amazon that wont be here till Tuesday) so yeah...

Sorry guys. I'm bummed about this too but I'm at the mercy of my ISP, which is never fun...

Don't worry. The 10 people who nominated videos this year already know whom they are voting for. :uhoh:

I'll be running a ghetto knock-off stream in the meantime until ngsilver can get his up and running.

Thanks for the assist Yue. Technician was in this morning and internet is working. We'll see how long this will last. I may have to call them again to actually run a new line (he replaced the connectors and took out 2 of the 5 splitters that he could get to around the snow) but for now I'm working. Last time this happened I was good for about 2 months, so we'll see if this lasts that long at least.

Anyway, I'll be grabbing all the videos for the semis and setting up the playlists tonight and we'll begin on Wed as normal. I do have my bowling league this week so I may be an hour or so late in joining in on the conversation, but the stream will start on time either way.

Awesome~ Good to hear!

I'll do one more ghetto one tonight but let me know if you'll be doing some other streams to catch up on the ones that were missed.
First Video is one I feel particularly passionate about since it tends to get the absolute lowest amount of votes but the streams really help generate some hype.

I'll keep an eye on the schedule but feel free to PM me so I can announce any last minute streams and such on the FB/Twitters.

I'm going to ponder the schedule over tonight and see if I can make any moves to try and make up for the missed nights. I too love looking at first video and at the very least I probably will move it to another night, perhaps adding it to Friday. We'll see. I'll update ya'll when I make my decision.

Hey yall. Before the stream goes live tonight I am currently running test streams to test all the parts of the stream. I'll be playing random videos, good stuff from the past year as well as some random new downloads I've gotten recently. Stuff from the org, YouTube, and MLP stuff.

So feel free to hop on before the actual VCA stream begins and watch stuff. Let me know if y'all notice any issues with the stream or the other items such as the file name views. I can only fix things till 630 and when I get back from bowling after 9pm.

Keep in mind, the stream will start on time at 8pm est tonight. Little over 5 hours from now.
