Con No Baka

This forum is for the announcement and discussion of anime conventions, and for the exchanging of rides to, and rooms at, conventions.

So. Con No Baka was forced to close a day early due to extreamly poor attendance and there are reports that it was the most poorly managed convention in history.

I'm conflicted between laughing at them or crying for them cause they've likely lost a LOT of money.

I got what i needed on friday (Gankutsuou Vol 1 DVD Box) :D

umm, the only things i found funny about the con was that one of the dealers was selling bootleg dvds, and that every room had the sign "Con no Baka: Anime Convention"

Jesus fried christ on a stick, not even any of the Kunicons closed early, and at least one of them was $30,000 in the red. Once the con reports get released we'll have to put'm side by side and figure out which one holds the Worst Con Ever crown...

lol. Yeah, the dealers room was small but great because since they weren't selling as much the dealers were eager to make good deals.

Also I saw that bootleg table get told off a few times, but when they announced the con was closing saturday night, they went all out shouting prices and trying to push all that crap off. That was pretty funny.

But yeah, I had a great time at the 2 day con, It was very poorly organized but I met some cool ppl and got lots of stuff. I still don't understand how they couldn't have seen it coming though, from pre-orders alone they should have seen if there were going to be any problems.

Also it's not a good idea to hold a first year con in a big expensive hotel. They should have gone for the Ramada or something. Even AN used it like 4 years ago.

You mean the ones selling the live-action Sailor Moon DVDs, fronted by a blonde who looks like...well I don't want to say anything libellous, so I'll just say "past her prime"? They seem to be at quite a few conventions...

I was actually looking specifically for Sailor Moon R DVDs, but there was a distinct lack of Sailor Moon stuff. I would have bought Petite Cosette, but Princess Tutu was five bucks cheaper so I got that.

The AMV screening room had like, 20 or so people in it, tops. :? The con was very unattended, which is weird, because I thought it was advertised enough.

I doubt there will be a Con no Debacle the Second... :(

It's a shame really.... I hope they do try and do it again, organize better, I really want a con to go to this time of year that's not run by God aweful Hobbystar.

Agreed, dispite being unorganized and horribly failing their tiny little AMV comp put CN to shame as far as technical and presentation aspects... not to mention actually delivering on the prizes.

HAHA, you guys still didn't get your prizes? Man has this revenge part and blaming us gone way too far

I wonder what excuse they have this time.... "Prizes" got lost in the mail? so they blame post office this time. Or it could have been a plan to block your emails, so they don't have to hear this shit again and just hope they get any entries next year :P

They gotten to the point where they just ignore e-mails. In truth none of us expected prizes, and even when they said they had them we didn't expect them to deliver, but they did send out emails saying, your prize will be sent out this week, so I'm going all the way to call them on it. I'll even pay the 20$ or whatever to go to their one day con panel and ask them in person.

It's a shame they had to close, but they really did bring it on themselves. I don't claim to know how to run a con, but you have to be more organized than that.
I still had a great time, met some good people to hang around with friday and Saturday, so that made the weekend worthwhile right there. And I got to see the seizure episode of Pokemon :P
My only regret was that I couldn't participate in the Smash Bros tournament, but the AMV Contest reshowing took place at the same time, and I wanted to see the audience's reactions. Sadly, there were only slightly more people than the first showing, and were equally as slightly more reponsive -_-

Okay, is it somehow possible that only I read the dates for the con? IT WAS A TWO DAY CON, THEY DIDN'T CLOSE EARLY!

I'm not saying that No Baka didn't suck eggs. Heck, I'd be dissapointed if a con with Baka in the name didn't suck. And I am sure that they made some huge mistakes, the most obivous the fact that they ran Friday/Saturday rather than Saturday/Sunday with a close second being that they somehow didn't communicate the fact that it was a two day con to anyone who went there, apparently including volunteers.

However, I believe that a great deal of the suckage can be tracked to the fact that it was a much smaller con than Anime North or CN Anime. Smaller cons are nothing like the larger ones. The guests are fewer, there are fewer people to talk to, and the panel/event line-up leaves much to be desired. You also get more time to hang out with friends new and old, and the guests, the vendor room will often have smaller vendors that you don't see at every other con, and the lines are shorter.

EDIT: I just heard enough reviews to invalidate most of what I wrote, so I killed that bit.

The actual convention site says Nov.25-27. Perhaps anime-cons.com changed it to 25-26 after hearing about the Sunday cancellation.

Hobby Star says that they will let you in to TAC this Sunday with a CnB badge, so maybe those of you who went can get some more mileage out of your CnB admission.

I'm not sure what exactly you're referring to here, but just to clarify and ensure that this isn't the last word on the subject: Maybe you should have checked the OFFICIAL site (http://www.connobaka.com/), which clearly lists prices for all 3 days of the week, and has tentative schedule listing that includes Sunday events. In conclusion: the con was intended to go all weekend, and it didn't work out. I was there, I know. Witnessed it all live as they handed out free manga as compensation at the dance Friday evening. (actually, I was off at Anime Hell while my brother was off snagging me some) :P

After read Con no Baka, Cosplay.com, and this site's forums on CnB I am SO happy I didn't attend this con. I was seriously thinking about it too since it's only a 10 minutes drive from my house.

I sorry you all didn't get a good turn-out for your AMVs :( Hope the fact that HobbyStar is letting people use their CnB tickets for an upcoming con in T.O (Sunday only)will make up for.
