That is across the country for me I don't able to make it. But I'm going to send one of my videos there for everyone to enjoy.

Question for anyone who plans to be there: would it be too distracting for you if someone nearby was operating a laptop ?

The reason is that I'm playing with the idea of doing live commentary during the show. This would be text only, posted probably to this forum. For legal reasons, there could be no streaming of audio or video.

It's just a thought at this point. There are several technical details to get worked out, as well as coordination with Con staff and probably the hotel staff, too.

The SeaTac Hilton advertises "high speed Internet access", but doesn't say if it's wireless or not. This is a convention hall; there should be an RJ45 in there someplace. 120V power would also be nice since a laptop battery is not going to last 3+ hours. Another possibility is a cell phone modem. That would be expensive and slow, but workable.

Tarant please direct this question towards the Sakra Con Message board under General Convention, I believe we wont be having the Broadband available but it would be better to ask there

I would expect the Net access charges ($$$) and hookups to be between me and the Hilton. Sakura-Con would not need to do anything other than what they're already doing. I just want to stay out of their way.

And the political issues may be more of an obstacle than the technical ones. Specifically, the act of posting comments about videos here. That's not generally done, at least not when the comments are negative. I'm not sure the chance for real-time feedback will be enough to overcome that.

Anyway, I'll think about it some more and contact con staff directly for more information.

if you want I will ask the Hotel Liason but last year I believe my boss in Newsletter told me that if we wanted the broadband service in any convention space (Even if its con goers and not staff using it) it would cost the con a lot

possibly you might try and see about the broadband for your hotel room and then set up a wireless network between your room and laptop

TaranT: I just got an email back from the Hotel Liason

Hello,

While the idea is quite cool, the technical issues are the bigger deal.

1. The conference center doesn't have wireless access points setup.
2. The S/C group is not paying the $399 setup fee plus $100 a day cost
for the hotel's internet provider in the the function space.
3. There is A/C power there, only on the walls, in secluded corners and
such where there aren't any chairs typically.

Other than those limitations, life is simple.

Thanks for saving me the trouble of calling the hotel. Sounds like it would be too expensive even if it didn't impose more work on the con's staff.

As for cell-based modems, I stopped by the Verizon and Sprint stores on the way home from work tonight. It's $200 for the modem and $40-$80 per month for access. Still too expensive for something like we're talking about here. But at least a modem would have avoided any conflicts with the convention.

Oh, well. A good idea that's not going to work this time. I might still bring the laptop just to take notes. I know of people who have done that, although I don't think my battery will last long enough.
