The New Otakon Get-Together Thread...

Postby dokool » Thu Jul 24, 2003 5:17 pm

Because the old one degenerated into off-topic bullshit and there's only two weeks left.

Stuff That's Been Suggested
1. Thursday evening get-together (pre-badge pickup)
2. Thursday night get-together (post-badge pickup)
3. Everyone getting together to watch the AMV competition screening

Now, it'd be nice if somebody with a fair knowledge of the Near-The-Con-Center Area could find the location of a late-night eating establishment, and if the majority of us going there can agree on one place.
After all, two weeks left.

So, no bitching about how we're excluding commonfolk (because we're not), no complaining about elitism, no self-depriciation.

Thank you.

As I will be working all of thursday until after prereg pickup is done, my vote goes towards either after badge pickup, or at the amv screening. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about the area so I'm entirely worthless when it comes to suggesting a place to go. I'm pretty open minded about restaurants and stuff, so I'd be ok with whatever anyone suggests (if it a food thing that is). Lookin forward to meetin everyone!

If my place of work would hand me my money on Wednesday instead of Thursday (they put it in the mail...just give it to me!) then I could make it for Thursday....

If you guys don't mind posting the meeting times and places of your open-invites parties for Friday and even Saturday nights, then I'd love to make it to something.

Last year Otakon had the contest at the bottom of the most open part of the convention center. I think I remember a fountain or sculpture in the area we could congregate at on Saturday..or right outside the doors to the amv room if you like standing :D

Why not both 2 and 3? There's nothing that says we have to meet just once right? :-P I'm pretty sure I'm meeting quite a few people post-badge, so even if it's pre or some time later, I know myself, Ashyukun and probably Meri and Mike will be meeting post badge .

I have discussed this on LiveJournal with Hsien and there is a *ton* of places we can go after badge pick-up ranging from sit-down restaurants, bars, etc. He says almost all of them are right next to the center, so I don't think it'll be difficult for us to find a place to sit down, grab a bite, chat or have a drink.

As for the contest...well that seems pretty obvious right? :) I'd also imagine throughout the entire weekend we'll see each other on and off right?

Just my two cents.

Yeah, 2 and 3 sound good to me.

Since everyone flocked to this post...

Option 4: Breakfast on Friday. Everyone's coming in early to get badges anyways, why not get a meal while the badge-less mob the BCC before events start? It's not like anyone's going to be sleeping anyways...

Yeah, we pretty much decided that pre-badge pickup is out, so post-pickup would be good.

So I guess about 10pm Thursday night (or a little after if some of our AMV people are still in line after 10pm [at 10 they close the doors but will continue to take the people already inside or something like that])

And I'm up for going to the contest screening. Which one though, Friday or Saturday?

I know I'm double posting, sorry (I will probibly be tripple posting in a moment)

Things have been moved around a bit this year (as far as where things will be shown. Like the parodies were mooved back to the old room this year or somehting, so I don't know where each screening will be) but meeting in front of the fountain is a great idea. I say a half hour before the event, then actually going to the screening like 10 minutes before it starts would be cool. Sound good?

I guess we can do this for all the screenings. Just that people have to keep an eye out for other creators (Badges are a plus!).

You won't have to wait in line for the AMV's since the rooms they use for the contest showing are large enough that they never run out of room.

Speek 4 urself. I love my sleep. I'll try to make whatever you setup though man. I might be working pre-reg thursday or hooking up some audio equipment for the LARP staff, but we will see.

And I'm down with any parties going on too.
Well, I'm of to work, peace!

I would suggest lining up together for MAT3K instead, since I know most people will want to see that, and AMVs start right afterwards. We could also do a late nite get-together and hang out in someone's room or something (not a party, just a hangout) after the screening ends. Saturday, I'd definately be up for meeting a few minutes early and getting everyone to sit together.

That said, who wants me to bring some extra sets of foam earplugs if I can find them? From what I remember, Otakon AMV screenings are louder than most rock concerts and my hearing's still good enough that I find it uncomfortable not to have them in.

I'm rather flexable and would probaably attend any of the gatherings.

Are we going somewhere within walking distance or do we need people with cars, and How many people are planning on coming?

I work at a sanding and shaping job in a factory right now where foam ear plugs are mandatory...we have a huge box of them to get new ones every night...they wouldn't miss...a few  I could bring like 20 of them or so even.

That's an excellent idea. Hit both major showings back to back, all in one group for extra viewing pleasure, head off after that for god-knows-what late into the night. Sounds like a hell of a plan.

Plus, I'm sure lots of AMV people submitted goodies for the MAT3K, so catching that in a group might be worth it.

Might I also suggest getting together for fan parodies?

Does that mean you're volunteering? =P I just planned on going to Target or something and picking up a handful. I know they have the wax ones there, but I really hate those. Foam ones are squishier and a lot more comfortable.

You may. It would be nice if a schedule mainifested itself online...same for the names of the AMV finalists =P

Didn't they post a schedule online last year like 2-3 days before the event?

Though if past history is any indication, we'll find out if we made it sometime next week or so.
