A-Kon/JACON Conference Call

I will be attending JACON and would be interested in a conference call. Even if it just ends up being a lot of hyper/drunk AMV creators yelling at each other so no one understands a word it would still be a neat "first time" event.

I have a cell phone which has just about unlimited minutes on the weekend (starts Friday at 8:00 PM). It doesn't have a built in speaker function but it can plug into a headset so in theory it should be able to plug into a phone speaker system if we could dig one up. I will also have my iBook with me and I will have 56K dial up access in Orlando.

What would be really nice is a high speed connection at both locations but I wouldn't count on it.

I *may* have a laptop by then and if that's the case that would work real nicely. I am waiting since our (AMD) new thin-and-lights came out, but it doesn't have TV-out or Firewire built-in. I'm hoping they'll add it with the next itteration. I wouldn't rule out high-speed internet. A-kon is at a pretty large and reputable hotel facility. I'm not sure about JACON.

Yeah, that would definantly be something we need to find out. I don't know the hotel there at all (never stayed there), so if anyone was there last year (Vlad, maybe) if they could report on that? If not, maybe I could look for its web site, or call the hotel. Or, as another possibility, if someone living at UCF over the summer wouldn't mind housing a bunch of AMV creators in their room to make use of the connection

Like I said earlier, I wanted to get this out here so it could be planned and such.

Yeah if we had a webcam on each end, this would make things REALLY easy. Too bad I don't have a webcam (or laptop just yet), but I'm sure someone has a webcam. If MJ is drunk enough maybe he'll get naked for y'all. O_o...let's hope not

The hotel at JACON is quite small and in the middle of nowhere (almost) I couldn't even plug into the TVs last year (yea, that old and cheap) so I wouldn't hold my breath on having such luxuries... Also, the hotel is not really in walking distsnce of the UCF... There is a shuttle (a van) so it kind of sucks.. Hence the car rental this year.... Otherwise the con itself is cool. BTW, if your comming from the airport, the hotel is on the other side of town and taxi is the only way to get there (I wouldn't even want to imagine trying public transport)... It a good $50.00 just to get there by Taxi....

Alright, so perhaps a webcam won't be the best option. Hmm...thanks for the input btw. We got a good month and a half to figure something out Roz. It might be a good thing to not have webcams since you might have to see our drunk and ugly mugs

Well there is still the possibility of high speed access at JACON itself. If nothing else we raid the university's library and act inconspicuous

Having a webcam itself would be the first obsticale so if you have one and are going to either con fess up.

We probably should work on a Plan B where we just do an audio conversation. Does anyone have a speaker phone set up that can plug into some like a cell phone?

FYI: I will have my car at JACON as well (driving in from Atlanta).

I know he doesn't come to this forum much, but I believe Kwasek still lives in Orlando. Perhaps he would be able to assist in aquiring a room at UCF with a high-speed connection. Maybe even get us a hook up with some equipment.

At any rate, what kind of equipment would we need to an audio conference? I may be able to scroung some stuff up also.

For the most basic audio conference all you need is:

Two speaker phones
Two phone cables
Two outside lines
- one of those lines has to have a dedicated number we can dial into
One phone card
- preferable held by the people who may not have a phone number to be called at

Provided some folks have access to a speaker phone then we should be able to pull it off one afternoon or evening from the con hotels.
