^^ This.
There are rarely too many GREAT shows on American TV or in licensed anime that come out each year.
Yes there are lots of good anime from the past just as there were lots of good TV shows in the past too. For both there was ALOT of crap too.
The reason some are feeling jaded about anime is they are runnig out of the backlog of earlier stuff that was high quality and they know it. They don't see much on the horizon that makes them think "wow, this will be AWESOME", mainly because they never have HAD to. Basically unless you are doing the fansubbing from stuff directly from Japan, you heard about just about every show from a buddy, saw it because a TV station decided you might like it or you sat at a con and watched it (and it's there because whoever is running the video rooms put it there).
That's true of all TV. It's the way things work. Don't consume so much of the medium and your appreciation for it will grow again.
When it comes to AMV's, I agree with the AMV Hell opinion to a point.
Before AMV Hell, people did comedy's exactly like it. The only difference is that they did a 60 second to 3 and a half minute long video using some funny audio and songs. So then AMV Hell comes around and does what the majority of funny AMV's did in 5 to 20 seconds-ish. Now people are less inclined to do longer audio clips because people get bored quicker now.
This is really true of most generes of AMV's now.
Now take into account the "Linkin Park Z" message. For YEARS the message here has been "BE ORIGINAL! BE ORIGINAL!". Well, the quality people agree with that and so the only way to be original with that stuff is do effect based stuff. "Look at mah video! It's SHINY!!!!!!!".
Is there ways around it? Meh, not really. Only people who haven't been doing/wathcing this for years find this stuff fresh.
I say that you make the video you'd like to see and if you do that, people will like it. The only way to get a fresh face on this is to not engage as much for a while. I personally don't watch AMV's every day or week even. Same with anime. Absence makes the heart grow fonder!
