Bingo. End of discussion.

I have a single VN on my computer. The only one I've ever played(Only finished a single ending, too; the bad one), Ever17. I commonly refer to it as a game when my bro peeks over my shoulder or it comes up in conversation. He, like the people Hasteroth mentioned, can't understand them at all. Though I do try to explain to him that it's just interesting characters and story.

Some people find intricate stories entertaining. Some explosions and dynamic interaction.

I'm not saying that you can't like both; I do(Ninja gaiden has stolen far too many hours of my life, but by-God I kick those ninjas' ass even on Master Ninja), but people should learn to discern between different mediums of entertainment and interest.

Yup, Bashar nailed it. I think it would be much easier to justify them as games if there wasn't such a trend towards dynamism in gameplay and the user-driven experience in Western gaming. That's why the comparison becomes really unfair and one-sided. On the gameplay side, they just don't hold up. I could go on for hours about the gameplay deficiencies of VNs, but I won't because I also see their narrative merits (and hey, I just spent the last few days being slightly addicted to Utawarerumono and successfully finishing it, so you can't call me a hater...)

I don't think people who dislike VNs are necessarily idiots. To each his/her own. But I do think the differences would be a lot easier to stomach if the "game" moniker wasn't used for VNs with such pretension.

There is a HUGE difference between ADV and NVL.

NVL is in novel style, text box fills up whole screen with picture in background (reads like a book).

ADV is for Adventure which isn't totally accurate but who cares, that's why I use the acronym. There is a text box at the bottom of the screen. Sprites and backgrounds are displayed above the textbox.

ADV usually has more choices, more dialogue heavy, and have a very different story telling style. They make you feel like you ARE the main character (Very good example of this is Katawa Shoujo).

NVL VNs are usually more linear (have less choices, some notable exceptions to this exist). Less dialogue. You almost always feel like you are seeing the story through the eyes of another, unlike VNs which put you in the position of the main character.

Well colour me stupid, I would have thought a Visual Novel was just an interesting variation of Graphic Novel. Or in other words a fucking book, no game whatsoever, a book with more pictures than words. Something printed on goddamned paper.

Clearly the people responsible in marketing (these visual novels) might be a bit too clever for today's largely can't read populations.

For a second, I thought the OP was saying people who play Visual Novels were idiots... lol

People have forgotten how to read and enjoy a good book.

I collect Magic: the Gathering novels. Lots of fantasy stuff, and Orson Scott Card's books. Christopher Pike is also an author whose oldies are goodies for me.

When I have kids, they gonna be reading God dang it. People who only want visuals for games and can't play make believe like Dungeons & Dragons etc. probably aren't exercising their imaginations much and ultimately, they literally get a weaker brain because of it.

I bypass most vis. novels and just get an all clear save file for teh hot sex0rs, but even then, I play through the game just to see how the story goes.

That and well, I can see some of the hentai to be taken 'seriously' and not solely for fap fap material, though ultimately, that usually ends up being the case.
"Strength lies in action. Let the weak react to me..." - Kamahl, Pit Fighter from Magic: the Gathering
"That is a mistake many of my enemies make. They think before they act. I act before I think!" - Vortigern from Merlin ('98)

Well then bite me Omni.

I play video games, read NOVELS, play VNs, watch anime, practice martial arts, read manga, and a whole lot of other stuff. I just happen to prefer VNs, but hell I read alot of books.

It's not the fact that they're novels that turns me away, it's the fact that the stories look horrendously trashy. Now, maybe there are some good ones, but the most I've gotten out of VNs is some laughs at reading their synopses.

Wow. Narrow minded point of view if I ever saw one. Some of them (Clannad) have incredible stories (Clannad). Some don't have H content (Clannad, Ever17) and are entirely about the story (Clannad). There are other's that include H content (Fate/Stay Night, Utawarerumono, Tsukihime, Kana ~Imouto~, the list goes on) but still have unbelievable stories (" ").

I could go on and on about how wrong you are but I won't.

That's because you're a fucking retard who doesn't know how to hold up the good end of an intelligent conversation. It's all a matter of opinion, got that fag? He doesn't like VNs, so what? Don't be so butthurt about it and just fucking move along, respect his opinion just like people put up with your goddamn stupidity. Tolerance motherfucker, do you speak it?

Wow you are so mature. I don't have a problem with his opinion. It's simply because he stated it as fact. If it was stated as an opinion, well then your argument holds up. But since it was not:

See what I mean?

Changed that for you so that it becomes opinion. The word "fact" does not mean it is fact. What something looks like is in the eyes of the beholder.

I was about to post something to this effect.

Now, generally I take the Guantanamo bay approach to everything, so if you can recommend me a visual novel that I would truly enjoy and I take the time to check it out, I may retract my misheld notions. You repeatedly suggested Clannad, but to be honest, while the synopsis didn't make me roll with laughter, I didn't find it particularly interesting. Are there VNs out there that are not, to quote Lupin the 3rd Abridged "Crying girls and snow crap"? That'd be a good start.
