If I go to denmark, I want to see Dane's, not arabs, If I go to pakistan, I want to see arabs, not chinese, and if I go to japan, I'll be going to see the japanese, not the americans who want to be japanese.

I don't see a problem with loving another culture, and I don't inherently see a problem with wanting to be immersed in that culture. But there's a fine line of the people who love the japanese, and the people who want to be japanese. It's the latter kind who bother me, because They're slowing destroying what they love.

Yes exactly! You understand completely. I'm not Japanese, so I certainly don't belong in Japan as a resident. I think Japan should stay Japanese, they're doing a good job so far of keeping it that way for the most part. They even have Japanese-only establishments. That's fine, more power to them in that. They are protecting their culture and people.

Xenophobic protectionism tends to only breed hate and distrust. Strange as it may sound, state sponsored anti-foreigner actions actually do keep the culture over there from becoming as jaded, cynical, and pissed off as much of the west (especially America) is.

I've been. It was fun - spent a good deal of time in Akiba, but I spent just as much time at a mountain Onsen and going to shrines. I'd definitely go back to see a friend who happens to be teaching until he can get the record company he works for to hire him legitimately.

I personally see absolutely nothing wrong with a Canadian from the West coast wanting to cross the ocean and live in harmony with the Japanese in their homeland (instead of being with exchange students and tourists who want to be in Canada :| ). I have a friend who moved to Kyoto (he's from Canada) and he's having a wonderful time. I know some 8 people from my Mom's University classes who are from Japan (very friendly people). And besides, I'll be teaching ENGLISH when I move over there, I doubt they'll have a problem with that.

You surprise me. I didn't think it was even possible to have less respect for you than I already had, but then I read this.

And for the record. I got into anime around February 2008. I've been into Japan, wanting to go there, the language, etc. for over 5 years. Simply put my japan obsession is not because of anime, sort of the reverse.

I totally agree with you.

There is no reason to BE a Japanese. I'm satisfied being German.
But what does 'being Japanese' mean? Is an American guy Japanese when he speaks Japanese and lives in Japan?

Being Japanese means being part of the culture, speaking the language, sharing the values, and much more. It is possible for a person of Japanese decent to be Canadian, many Japanese are born in Canada and do not hold the same values as the Japanese from Japan, that's what seperates them. Canadians hold very different values from the Americans so if I were to go south and for some irrational reason want to live there (never) I would still be Canadian.

PS: Canada rules, we burned the White House in the War of 1812 :P

I'm from Quebec, let me tell you, those that have an obsession with 'preserving' their culture likely are just trying to succeed in being left behind by the rest of the planet that has realized we are all increasingly becoming a non nationalized blend of all of the above.

I find cultural protectionism annoying in Quebec, I likely wouldn't enjoy it in Japan.

But hey, let them stay in the past if they insist. Just so long as they realize the future is for those willing to go to it.

Because I know other people who left Victoria to live in Japan and are doing great, and I simply want to go there.

Well, as foriegners if anyone goes to japan, none of will really have any future unless you marry a Japanese person cause Japan isnt really multi cultural. And as the other guy pointed out the otaku population is highly ditested in Japan.

So then the solution is easy: De-otaku yourself for a bit ad take a vacation to Japan!
(Warning: may be harder than it seems)
We came we saw...we attempted to kick ass, but in the end we failed, and yes, I'm still in pain.
