Even though I never talk about anime outside of the internet, I never feel lonely.
Maybe because I actually try to have a life. |:>

If the subject comes up among friends at school that's cool. If it doesn't that's cool too. Even though anime isn't as popular, I don't see it as a strange thing at all. Just be casual with it, if your going to be awkward that's no fun at all (and pushings one into a corner).

Did I mention?

At my current school, I was kind of hiding myself because well, I was new, I'm a shy person (In RL). Then I ended up making a couple of friends. I made it known that I was into anime almost right away. It turned out all of my friends had some interest in anime. One of them (Jadecavy) more so than the others, and he followed me here.

Yeah I'm not all otaku in public either lol. Has little to do with anime though, I just grew up learning to hide my interests from the public eye is all. I hide everything from Fantasy sports to video games to movies (unless I'm asked to comment) to whatever, it's not just anime. In private I might talk about anime but I do it in a more casual fashion.

I won't even see an anime movie in a theater though lol.. just like I won't watch Resident Evil either, it's not quite anime related... I just don't watch animation on the big screen ^_^ mostly due to the public view that it's just cartoons (which most times it is...), but I'll get over that. OFC I been saying that for the last 8 years... I gotta work my will up to go to a con some day lol. The last one I tried to go to..... Oh man. They make those things in high classed hotels!! WHY?? I ask again WHY IS THAT?? What strange bedfellows lol. Not that anime can't be mature enough to hobnob with the rich (debatable, I don't care what you say, most of it is rather immature fanservice and a waste of time), but MOST fans are TEENAGERS!! This kids need to be put on a leash! Not to be running around in the Courtyard Marriott.

We just got back from watching Ponyo and we might have been the only adults in the theater that didn't have little kids in tow. But honestly, even being the rather self-conscious person that I usually am, wondering what others would think of me was the last thing on my mind as I took my seat. But maybe you're thinking of other kinds of anime movies, in which case, the opportunity has hardly ever presented itself outside of trips to "art" theaters in Chicago (where we saw Paprika, a pretty diverse audience for that one) and special screenings of Naruto and Bleach films out here in the suburbs (attended neither but can only imagine how they may have gone down).

Conventions are much less awkward than you'd expect, though I stuck with my girlfriend for one of the days and spent the 2nd one on my own, wandering about and taking it all in, but not making much of an effort to talk to people at all. It still feels good to be in the middle of something like that -- any sense of personal self-consciousness kind of melts away when everyone else around you is clearly dropping their guard -- though I'm still not sure how you're supposed to "meet" people at these and make friends, though that's always one of the big selling points of going to a con. Whatever.

Hotels and conference centers are desperate for business these days and will welcome almost any group, no matter what kind of event they want to throw. They probably advertise themselves as being professional, high-class business travel and conference destinations, which makes sense since that's probably 90% of their business during most of the year. But keeping those rooms filled every day and night is all they really care about, even if it means letting high schoolers run wild in their lobbies. Of course, that's not all there is to it. You might be surprised by who you'd find there and how many of the kids really need leashes (or don't). I guess you've just got to see it for yourself.

I probably sound like I'm some kind of seasoned con-goer but nothing could be further from the truth. Just my observations from a very limited (by overall, positive) time spent at cons.

that's just the POINT! I wouldn't WANT to be any of these dorks' friends!! lol

No, like I said a con experience IS something I want to subject myself too... even if I hate myself in the morning... at least that's what I thought, I wanted to volunteer for a con some years ago (Kumoricon 07 or 08) but I went to the orientation thing and... I never felt so awekward in my LIFE!! And that's saying a LOT I've been in some pretty embarrassing situations, it takes LOTS to embarrass me. I couldn't imagine PAYING for that kind of experience. I never got to go (couldn't find my pass.. just my luck) BUT o.0....

Maybe it's a much better experience just being there or maybe Kumoricon is just a horrible place ^_^ lol... No I'm sure it's the fact that it was just an orientation not the real thing. Well anyway I hope to go someday, but I will seriously have goosebumps coming in. I'm in an anime club (well was...) it can be fun... but it also starts off a little awkward lol to me. I'm also the outgoing type, not shy at all... but seeing grown human beings dressed as pink cats with whiskers and others in capes and crap REALLY tests anyone's mettle. Especially when it's in a lobby of a high class hotel ^_^.

IE I attended an 'animation' con earlier, that wasn't so bad (I was UNDERdressed though >.<, those things are surprisingly posh, I was probly the youngest one there!! the thing was mostly to recruit animation directors for CN and stuff...). I'd been to countless cons at convention centers (like Comic Party) and school fairs (my school was surprisingly japanesey) but NOTHING prepared me for this o.0

NOTHING.
