A poll JUST for anime fanatics (take a peek)... ^_^

Postby SketchH » Tue Feb 24, 2009 12:35 pm

Well, I'm researching something and I need your help. I've noticed that ANIME has become one of the most popular styles of animation in the world. I know why I like it, but it began to make me wonder. What is it that (world wide) makes it so addictive? What SPECIFICALLY makes it so popular? And I don't really want a random answer like "everything," or "the story's better." Rather, what MAKES the story better, or the animation more desirable? Would it matter if anime was animated differently but had the same content (story line, etc), would it matter if the story line was different and the animation was the same? Give me some feedback on why YOU like it. ^_^

Thanks very much in advance.

For me, it's the fact that there are no human actors in it and as such, every anime can be original. No Tom Hanks in every second movie. Of course, the types are simmilar, but still every character is unique.

Also, there are very specific laws of physics, chemistry and stuff, which makes it funny to watch :>

90% of anime is crap. We only get what was considered "good" in Japan and 90% of that is crap.

The plots of animes are so much more vastly entertaining then most of todays movies. However, movies have restrictions on what they can and cant do. For anime... If your able to draw it then it can be done.

Another thing to consider is most animes involve kids or teenagers that target the specific group. So its only natural that teens would relate to it. Don't get me wrong there are adults who can still enjoy anime as well. Specifically more complex shows that target the audience who likes being intrigued with sophisticated plots like GITS.

So simple answer: Anime has no limits which provides endless oppurtunities for entertainment. The plots of anime are usually so unique/weird that people are drawn to them. Seriously when was the last time you saw a movie or read a book like evangelion? <=simple reference but you get the point.
"The people cannot be [...] always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to [...] the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to public liberty. What country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned [...] that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants."-Thomas Jefferson

Not really, what we get is the stuff that Funimation and ADV think will SELL in the USA. Since, we as a nation have no taste ... what we end up with is the crap.

Who speaks the voices for the characters then?

I think he/she/it was referring to the on-screen characters not being limited by human anatomy.

No - that's one of the reasons the American dubbing industry is in the toilet (according to their own people) - they can't tell the shit from the good stuff.

Anime has more genres than TV or hollywood movies - something for everyone.
Anime is not restricted by anything and is more imaginative (lol movies have to keep making stuff from Marvel and D.C comics or basing on something which exists on a different medium because they can't think of anything new and innovative, although the Matrix did achieve this, only to fall apart in the third movie).
You see different characters, not actors trying to force their identities onto a role, I don't see movies where actors blend in well with their roles anymore.
Lots of anime have well thought out plots and theme, some as deep as classic novels, for example I could write a pretty comprehensive essay on Kino's Journey.
Oshi- I'm going off topic.
"if anime was animated differently but had the same content (story line, etc), would it matter if the story line was different and the animation was the same?" <- sorry you got me confused here. Most anime are animated differently. 'Style' in anime is also something which makes it more interesting to watch, like comparing ef's abstract art style to Kara no Kyoukai's motion use and KARAS's CG. I think animation has an impact on how the anime is communicated to the viewer though.

Oh and big swords, massive drills, lolis with magical staffs, beamz in space > entertainment than machine and handguns.

oh and I should mention that anime = escapism, apart from slice of life ones like Honey and Clover and NANA, most of them detach the viewer from everyday life and make them em- I mean, provide a different form of mindless entertainment. Whereas a lot of movies try to link back their stories to everyday life and have 'themes' and make you think about the world you live in, which to me should be the point of novels not entertainment on a screen =/

For me there are essentially four reasons:
  • The anime I watch has a plot from beginning to end. I hate episodic series. (Where each episode has nothing to do with the previous one. With exception to maybe the Simpsons or the Family Guy)
  • There are genres, settings, and plots in anime that are not easily found in American animation. Variety.
  • I like the sound of spoken Japanese
  • I like how the animation is expressive.
