Some suggestions needed for this hopeless nOOb :)

Postby mchick101 » Sun Feb 01, 2009 5:48 pm

First, I hope this topic isn't in the wrong place of the forums.

Okay, so I'm a major newbie to anime and I'm looking around for what I can watch and don't know where to start. I'm sort of picky, too.
I've already google'd some anime titles and read up on storylines but I'm having a hard time choosing.
I'm looking for a less popular anime with an in depth storyline... something very captivating that will hook me in lol. Genres I particularly enjoy include paranormal, cyber-punk and sci-fi, scary, old japan/samurai, fighting, stuff like this. New or old anime titles, I prefer dubbed but I will watch subbed as long as the text is fairly easy to read. I'm not really into yaoi or yuri though :/
And so this don't look like a "one word reply topic", can you give me 1 or 2 reason's I may like the anime.

Here's a list of what I've already watched (I just started watching anime within the last 2 years so this is short):
Bleach (ongoing)
Naruto Shippuden (ongoing)- nope I've never watched all of Naruto
DB/DBZ/DBGT
FMA
Ergo Proxy
Hellsing/Hellsing Ultimate

I think that's it... the other popular titles I'm missing will come later.

I've tried watching Soul Eater (loved the animation) but couldn't get into it. I also trying Blood+ but couldn't get into it either. I may come back to both of these in the future though.

Thanks in advanced!! :D

Eh, it's not "less popular" but Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (and the second season, 2nd gig) seems like it would be right up your alley (cyber-punk)

If you're willing to take a step into slice of life/drama, then EF-a tale of memories and EF- a tale of melodies are definitely worth a try. Great animation, tons of drama, and a compelling story.

Higurashi no naku koro ni (When they Cry) is mystery/horror series, and it doesn't hold back (and borders on hard to watch at times). Has a great Opening song too.

That's all I can think of atm with those genres in mind (and the less popular stipulation)

There's only 3 less popular I can think of...

Utawarerumono
Speed Grapher
Gungrave

I could recommend a lot of mecha genre animes if you like.

I'm wondering now if I even know what is "popular" and not so popular in the anime world. Having only seen a few series, I assume many of what I've seen were "popular" because they were dubbed in english... or they are the most used anime in an amv lol.

Am I maybe 1/2 correct? :book:

Seconded.

Also, dubbed doesn't mean the series is popular.

You could try Serial Experiments Lain. Its a scifi mind trip story. Although I suppose its the type where you love it or hate it. It is pretty popular regardless and yes it is dubbed.

Nothing about that sounded "noobish" to me. Though I'll avoid digressing on the topic of Noob-vs-Newb.

Try those.

This. More specifically, Baccano! and Mushishi.

Goddammit, don't come back until you watch them both.

I'm not gonna give an indepth description as you could just as easily google them and read the summary, but these two shows in particular stand out, especially when compared to what you're looking for.

Thanks to everyone. I'm writing all of them down on my list.

It doesn't take me long to watch through a 50+ episode series so I may be back. I'm thinking I just need to really figure out what I like so when I look at lists of anime titles I don't feel like

Watch Perfect Blue if you haven't already. If you liked it, watch Paranoia Agent. (Paranoia Agent is "mainstream" though)

That too. Generally if you like psychological/drama/kinda trippy movies try Satoshi Kon's works. Those are Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, Paranoia Agent and Paprika.

If you want to try something different (and I do mean different, both in terms of story and graphic style), check out Massaki Yuuasa's creations: Kemonozume, Kaiba and Mind Game.

Three more that might be worth looking into are:
Hell Girl, Black Lagoon, and the classic Elfen Lied.

I would say these are popular but not mainstream. Hell Girl is a sad story that I found engaging. Black Lagoon is action. Elfen Lied is...both.
"Paper or Plastic?" I just say, "Doesn't matter to me. I am bi-sacksual."

Baccano!, Mushishi (didn't like it, a little too mystery drama for me) and Clannad are all not licensed in the US yet so you'll have to find it on the web

paranormal

I also suggest Berzerk (slightly mainstream) and NaruTaru for your paranoia. P Agent is excellant too, all three of those are available in English.

cyber-punk and sci-fi

Evangelion (mainstream), Cowboy Bebop (mainstream but you GOTTA see it), Macross Frontier (subbed) or you can get the dubbed Macross, it's VERY old but a classic, just Frontier is basically the same thing (not really) just updated. OR you can try Gundam. Gundam and Macross (Robotech) are like Star Wars and Star Trek respectably. If your a Star Wars fan your more likely to enjoy Gundam and the same with ST and Macross.

scary

Ghost Stories (licensed), Ghost Hound (fansub)

old japan/samurai

Samurai Champloo (mainstream), Afro Samurai

fighting

Ranma (licensed comedy, loooooong but just get the first season you'll be happy xD, very old), Tenshi na Konamaiki (fansub and a personal fave), Tenjo Tenge (licensed), School Rumble (licensed)- not sure if you'd term SR as fighting... but I recomend seeing it

If you just want funny than you want Azumanga Daioh.

Now and Than Here and There is awesome drama, you'll like it... I just couldn't figure out what category to put it into

And the same goes for Kino's Journeys. Just get it.

And remember, you can never read an anime by it's description.
If you do not think so... you will DIE
