Do I deserve to call myself an anime fan?

Postby biggnife » Sat Jan 17, 2009 8:46 pm

I HAVEN'T dismissed the upcoming Dragonball movie as being doomed to failure.
I prefer to watch my anime dubbed.
My DVD and manga collection is rather small.
I'm a big enough pussy to buy anime that I could have watched on boochsack for free.
I actually stopped watching Death Note on the 'sack when I realized that it was being sold on iTunes.
I haven't seen a lot of popular anime, including Cowboy Bebop, Wolf's Rain, and Neon Genesis Evangelion (I read some of the Angelic Days manga, though).
I know this is off-topic, but just as an aside, I actually LIKED Twilight (both the book and the movie)

I mean, I love anime, but there are times where I feel like I don't deserve to call myself a true anime fan.

Don't worry about whether or not people consider you a true anime fan. There are some elitist anime fans out there that would claim you don't count because you like Dragon Ball and they consider it a disgrace. But this is kinda like where the "hardcore" gamers try to say casuals aren't true gamers. It's more or less up to you if you wanna label yourself as such.

Who the fuck watches fansubs on youtube? That's fucking stupid. No way to stream nice 1080p releases to your big flatscreen.

This makes you a bigger anime fan than about 90% of the people who populate this site, claiming their hardcore otaku.

I honestly call myself an hardcore otaku for the fact that I simply make too much time for watching it when I've got a series I want to finish. I also love the styles that I see in some modern anime, particularly a white and green striped hat that I can't seem to find locally.

Anime is like any other hobby, you're only as hardcore as you consider yourself to be.

There's nothing to worry about.

Yes, you're an anime fan... just not a very bright one.

Daymn... cold.

If you have to question your love of anything, you're obviously NOT a fan.

So in going with the fact that you don't have faith in yourself, I'm going to say you're NOT a fan as well...

Well when you download high quality crap through bittorrent (like me), put it on your PSP and hook it up to your 1080p HD Flatscreen TV. Then you're very happy.

And you fail as a fan, but you are a fan.

All that should matter is that you like the stuff.

If you want to get more into it and become a true elitist, I would suggest the following:

Read up on/pick some shows airing in Japan currently to watch, torrent HD fansubs and watch as soon as they are out.
Lurk 4chan.org's /a/ board and become a newfag. An Idlechan is fine too.
Find batch torrents for all those shows you have not seen, dl, marathon, delete, buy DVD's.
Go to anime cons.
Make AMV's, enter them in amv con contests, go to said cons.
???
Profit.
