That said, I don't provoke a conversation about anime with people who may not be interested in. I answer and even go further if anyone else starts with it.
I'm 23, and I always find older people to have a wrong idea about anime; as many of you already said, they think they must be "stuff for children", when they are lucky enough to avoid mistaking with hentai. Oh well, what I always try to do, when I smell this position, is to explain that I've found several anime which were actually deeper and more clever than many well-regarded Hollywood productions.
That brings the thing back to the first assumption: people near me usually know my way of being extremely serious and not childish at all, and therefore trust me and get curious. If they don't... Well, I don't really have to demonstrate anything to anyone.
