Do You Hide Your Hobby?

This forum is for the general discussion of Anime.

Actually, I do hide the yaoi. The physical DVDs/Manga/Doujinshi stay hidden under my desk (though the light shounen-ai stuff will generally stay on shelves), and it's something I generally won't talk about with people, even those who know I'm into anime, unless I know they are also interested in that. But as far as regular anime/AMVs go, while I don't usually go around with large neon signs, I also don't see any reason to hide it. :P

I hide it. I've also officially heard all my friends make various derogatory comments about anime and the people that watch it at various points in time, so I just assume I'd rather avoid the subject in general. How I wound up in such a position I'll likely never know, but I live with it. =\

Lame, I know. But I guess that's why I come here. <_<

Eh, like a few others I don't hide it but don't advertise it. I bring a portion of my anime to college with me, and nobody really asks about it. Nearly all of my friends like anime (in fact, that was a big reason of why I got into it in the first place.)

The anime club at my school is one of the largest (and most diverse) clubs on campus. As long as I have someone else interested to talk to I'll carry on a conversation on anime without caring who listens. Working the recruiting table is the only place where I advertise.

I have a different stance when I'm in pretty much any other public setting. When someone asks me what I'm into I'll tend to shy away from anime, or phrase it in a way that doesn't get me comments along the lines of, "so you watch pokeymans?"

If someone is interested I'll go further, if not I'll just leave it as is.

Heck no. All the anime stuff is out and about, along with all the Halloween stuff, the Lenore the Cute Little Dead Girl Stuff, the generally weird stuff...

The nice thing about being old (36) and having no kids is that I don't give a flying rat's ass what anybody thinks about what I choose to like and spend my time on. :D

Today in my lab at Uni. "Hey thats a nice Nagisa mousepad you have there, where'd you get it?" "Singapore "Awesome". I've seen people watch anime on their laptop in the middle of nowhere on campus by themselves.

Erm back on topic. No I do not.

Also I'm a bit surprised about your statement. Do you not have an anime club at your college? I was thinking it was pretty standard in the world :/ In my city 3/5 of the universities have anime clubs. Heck I'm going to go see Sword of the Stranger in a lecture theatre tomorrow :/

We had an anime club, but it got disbanded over the summer session. Apparently they had like 10 members, but 6 of them graduated, and none of the other four wanted to run the club. I was thouroughly irritated. :|

Unfortunetely, I live in a pretty rural area, so anime isn't as well known around here. In fact, when people see it, they just automatically assume that I'm worshipping Satan or something. I hate ignorance. O_o

Ya know, to be honest, each and every last one of you that "hide" it and avoid acknowledging it, frankly the problem is YOU.

You obviously think there's something wrong with anime, otherwise you'd treat it as nothing worth even acknowledging.

Would a person that goes bowling all the time be ashamed to have dozens of atypical bowling trophies on a shelf?

Does have a model train set in the basement make you some kind of oddball?

Maybe you like making plastic models, even though some think models are for kids too.

What about UFO "stuff" does an interest in Area 51 make you some sort of whacko?

Does just being clearly computer literate brand you a nerd?

People without hobbies are in my opinion almost certainly f**king boring in all likelihood.

Anime, it's just a hobby. Thinking otherwise, means the only one with a hangup, is YOU.

Hahah oh wow.

Did you not stop to think that maybe they don't enjoy having people stir shit up about them due to their hobby? Just because they choose to not blatantly flaunt their hobby does not mean that they question it's integrity.

Some interests are just not widely acknowledged in the eyes of the general public, and for those who maintain those interests, the choice is theirs if they want to hide it or not. This does not in turn imply that the person with said interests thinks that there's something wrong with their hobby, but rather that they have acknowledged that other people might not feel the same way towards it as they do.

To be honest, the whole anime thing is easier for me to explain to other people than some of my other hobbies. I personally don't really need to hide it - I used to actually be adamantly promotional of it, but I've chilled out and I've certainly never had that much stuff to show off anyways. I tend to get weirder looks for my much more obvious obsession with ships and airplanes and such.

I don't really like explaining these things to people, either way, unless they seem genuinely curious about it. I have been asked a couple of times about this and that, but unless the person showed a real interest beyond asking "oh what's this box set here?" I mostly just tended to sideline the topic with a really short response. If they don't want to pursue it beyond that, I let it be. Conversely, if someone comes in and seems enthusiastic about it and has something to relate, I'm more than happy to discuss it with them. Otherwise I just save it for cons and LAN parties, beyond which (and besides the Internet, of course) I honestly don't tend to associate with people by interest all that much, and I try to de-emphasize mine in general. Not that I have any particular stigma about it, but I honestly don't rank any of my hobbies as being defining to my identity and whatnot, so they're generally not the first things I want people to know about me, be they my anime DVDs or my airplanes and tanks or my video games. So, I tend to de-emphasize them as appropriate. Or just not let people into my room :P

I don't tend to talk about anime / AMVs so much because Magic is a much more prominent part of my life and that's what most people tend to notice more.

I don't hide it. I only talk about it if someone brings anime up or if in a conversation, a point comes up where I could reference a scene from an anime to it, like, "yo, that reminds me of this anime called ____ where they did _____ also" or something along those lines. Or the other way around, I bring up a scene from an anime to talk about, etc.

Well, you know, I just talk about anime like any other tv show.
