Of course, I can think of two off the top of my head even.

1. The nameless guideperson from Tenchi Muyo! GXP who helped Seina early in the show, and continues to appear as the show progresses. One great line was in a later episode...
Seina: Ah, Mr. Guideperson, it's been a while!
Guide: Ah, Seina! It's been a while!
Seina: Yeah... errr... what was your name again?
Guide: Ummm, errr... Nice to see you again Seina.... *sweatdrop*

When I was writing translated scripts for GXP, I would refer to him in the cast listing as "The Token Black Guy" ;)
Here he is, kindly pointing to himself so you don't miss how black he is

And of course, the villain from Mahou Yuugi 3D's first and only episode, Coffee-sama!

Black, just like a cup of joe! And fat, just like a tub of chocolate pudding!

I cant believe nobody montioned this yet: Anshi from Utena. That was a big stink here in Japan when it came out (or so I heard)
Black people in Japan? In 4 months I have seen probably 3 just walking on the streets. But they are definately on Television. I watched a whole program about a tribe of Africans that were completely unused to urban lifestyle brought to an apartment in Tokyo and made to live. That was freaking hilarious!

Well, heres something I want to know. Every once in a while a black dude shows up in Dragonball or DBZ on CN, and hes always drawn in the 1920s black face style way(Like the Red Ribbon Army leaders side kick, or too a lesser extent Mr Popo). Most of you probably have no idea what that is, but it used to be in a lot of old WB cartoons, but scenes with it have since been cut out. Its basically when a white guy paints his face black and his lips white. Its supose to be like steriotypical portrail of blacks used in movies because way back when, they wouldnt actually use black people. If any of you have seen, or do see Gangs of New York, durring the play scene where they make fun of Linlcon, there is a guy done up in black face on stage. Anyway, has you might imagine, most people consider it pretty damn offensive, so how is DB and DBZ getting away with it?

I'm guessing Brock from Pokémon would go to the kick ass co-stars section.
I always thought he was mexican or something. or possibly the dark skined asian guy :?

I think we've run a bit off topic now. The original question was asking about main characters or cool co-stars. Random people who appear for maybe one episode can't be considered co-stars.

As for why DBZ gets away with the stereotypical design, I don't think the reason they have those lips is because of black face. I've seen Asian characters drawn with round fat lips too. Most bozoku (a term defining the type of manga or anime character who define what a 'punk' looks like. Typically manga. Examples are Kuabara from Yuu Yuu Hakusho, binbou from Excel Saga, etc.) are drawn with the lips to sort of indicate they don't have much intelligence. Since leaving your mouth open and lips shoved outward makes one look pretty silly.

Then again only one sure-fire way to be absolutely sure if those DBZ character designs are based on black face or not of course is to ask Akira Toriyama. :)

Im not saying the people who drew the characters intended for them to be like black flace. In all likely hood they werent, but neverless, from an american perspective, they bare a resemblance to it. And since past events have shown people being very sensitive to that kind of stuff, im just suprised no one has thrown a fit about it yet.

you think wrong. Rap, hip hop and R&B are very popular in Japan.

other anime with black characters - 8man After, Sukeban Deka, Street Fighter, Kenshin the Movie (sailor in the beginning), there are more but I have to go.

There was that one black guy on the aircraft carrier in Episode 8 of Evangelion... he didn't say or do anything, but he's there.

And a whole mess of black people in Bebop...

There need to be more Chinese mecha pilots in anime, I can count the number of 'em on one hand! :D

Anime artists don't seem to be that big on drawing people of East Indian or middle eastern background either.

But again, it's all likely just due to a lack of those nationalities in Japan.
