You might want to take a look at Elfen Lied. And if you liked lain, try Haibane Renmei, not big on action but very nice and by the same guy as Lain. You might enjoy Fullmetal Alchemist or MushiShi on the mystical/magical side of things.
And yeah, RahXephon was much better than Eva (of course I saw Eva long after it came out so it's not a big nostalgia thing for me).
i disagree =( i liked RahXephon.
however i also disagree that its a NGE clone, ppl just have that misconception because of the end of evangelion movie being somewhat similar to the RahXephon ending imo -_-. i mean sure some of the stuff is similar but the explanations behind everything is completly diff -_-.
Hmm, I don't have anime suggestions here (since I've been looking for those myself as well) but try Mulholland Drive or Pulse (the original Japanese movie) They're both stylistically surreal, slow-paced and heavily psychological (like the abstract scenes that happened in the characters' minds in EVA and just that gerenal Lain creepiness)
Just discovered Noien during one of the last RightStuf sales. Awesome show but the the art styles change from episode to episode - it's most obvious between eps 1 and 2 ... and also one of fight scenes about two thirds of the way through.
RahXephon the Movie sucked but I liked the RahXephon series better than NGE. Though it gets a bit choppy in the last couple of eps. (The movie is a much abridged and altered version of the show)
I haven't seen Paprika but from what I've heard it's good.
Elfen Lied is one of the best damn stories ever. Not very trippy or thought provoking but well written.
I'd definitely disagree. I preferred RahXephon because the ending almost made sense. It was visually gorgeous and I didn't have to do a drug to make sense of the last two episodes.

You want thought provoking, there is a good choice. It's also rather amusing when it isn't completely twisted.
