Is there anything like NGE or Lain out there?

Postby criticalx » Sun May 18, 2008 5:14 pm

I haven't watched any anime in years, but I'm looking to get back into it.

My favorites would have to be Neon Genesis: Evangelion and Serial Experiments: Lain. The art direction in both can be pretty abstract and bizarre, just like their storylines.

Basically, I want something that's going to mind-eff me. Something original that dwells in the intellectual/spiritual/metaphysical realm. Action is a plus.

Any suggestions would be appriciated.

Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, it dives into the spiritual and metaphysical.

Higurashi no naku koro ni. Doesn't really explain what it's doing until the second season (Higurashi no naku koro ni Kai) but trust me, it's better without the explanation. Just stick to regular higurashi and pretend Kai doesn't exist.

Dennou Coil - explores the electronic and virtual side of the interconnected world-Net-scape through the eyes and minds of children. It provides a fairly imaginative look at the code work, tools, and personalities behind the building of software and technology in general. Best Intellectual Anime of 2007. If you liked Lain, you'll love Dennou Coil.

Ghost Hound - explores the spiritual and Shintoistic side of the spirit-worldscape through the eyes of a group of kids whose lives are entwined together by forces larger, more powerful, and vastly more egotistic then their own. Wheras evangelion drew inspiration from the Bible, Ghost Hound draws from the myths, legends, and shamanistic practices of Japan's ancient pantheistic religion.

Haruhi gets a little philosophical, but unless you have a bit of grounding there and are paying attention you're likely to miss it.

Which should I watch first? I've wanted to start NEG but I heard of RahXephon and was intrigued.
