Azumanga Daioh is a slice of life show about a group of high school students. One's an athlete, one's a brain, one's a useless showoff, one's the sulking one, one's the shy one, and finally there's Chiyo-chan the 10 year old genius. The show follows them through three years, is remarkably funny, and has some neat surreal moments as well. Definately one of the best shows in recent memory.

That show is what reminded me that there is still good anime out there and that there are comedy animes out there that are acutally funny. ^^ but I warn you, it is NOT a kiddy show.

A quick kthulhu Azumanga primer:

<a href="http://pantransit.reptiles.org/images/2002-06-09/Detail.1.jpg">"Osaka"</a> is from Osaka, although she doesn't fit the
"noisy" Osakan stereotype. She's the spacy one in the series, and provides some great humor at times.
<a href="http://pantransit.reptiles.org/images/2002-06-09/Detail.2.jpg">Chiyo</a> is the 10 year old genius, as iserlohn mentioned. Usually paired with Osaka.
<a href="http://pantransit.reptiles.org/images/2002-06-09/Detail.3jpg">Kagura</a> is an athlete. She's a "dumb jock" character - all muscle and no brains.
<a href="http://pantransit.reptiles.org/images/2002-06-09/Detail.4.jpg">Yomi</a> is the somewhat firey one. She gets annoyed easily and often. She is also insecure about her weight, and will do a lot to get the scale to read fewer pounds (which also explains her in the opening credits)
<a href="http://pantransit.reptiles.org/images/2002-06-09/Detail.5.jpg">Sakaki</a> is the shy, quiet "cool tough" girl, although she doesn't really want to be. She's rather self conscious. She's also involved in a running gag in the series.
<a href="http://pantransit.reptiles.org/images/2002-06-09/Detail.jpg">Tomo</a> is the energetic character. Much of her humor comes from the ways she pisses Yomi off.

There is also <a href="http://www.tv-tokyo.co.jp/anime/azumanga/character.html">Yukari-sensei and Minamo-sensei</a>, the crazy and NICE teachers (in that order), as well as a few minor characters.

All in all, the best series of 2002, hands down, in my book, and one of my all time favorites.

My friend put it this way: It's the anime equivalent to Seinfeld, as a shoujo series.
Much as I think Seinfeld is stupid and not really funny, I'm forced to agree. Nonetheless, Azumanga is definately one of the alltime best comedies in anime to date (and setting insanely tough competition for the future).

Xtv and eva are not even in the same league especially in animation quality and Kawaiiness. Azumanga is the the third greatest anime ever.

I finally got most of the series from a friend (gonna have to fill in the few episodes that are missing soon), and I'm loving it. I never get tired of Sasaki and the neko. :p And I'm going to have to make a Azumanga AMV at some point just so I can use the scene from the OP with Chiyo-chan and Osaka flying along by flapping their pigtails (well, Chiyo-chan's pigtails... Osaka's daydream about them was a riot).

I think it's great that a series that is, at its core, about real life is so well liked and so good. :D

The teacher is aces.

"I want a glass of pool water--the water you've all been in!"

And I love how Sakaki's influence over cats extends to even electronic toy ones.
