A quick kthulhu Azumanga primer:
"Osaka" is from Osaka, although she doesn't fit the
"noisy" Osakan stereotype. She's the spacy one in the series, and provides some great humor at times.
Chiyo is the 10 year old genius, as iserlohn mentioned. Usually paired with Osaka.
Kagura is an athlete. She's a "dumb jock" character - all muscle and no brains.
Yomi is the somewhat firey one. She gets annoyed easily and often. She is also insecure about her weight, and will do a lot to get the scale to read fewer pounds (which also explains her in the opening credits)
Sakaki is the shy, quiet "cool tough" girl, although she doesn't really want to be. She's rather self conscious. She's also involved in a running gag in the series.
Tomo is the energetic character. Much of her humor comes from the ways she pisses Yomi off.
There is also Yukari-sensei and Minamo-sensei, the crazy and NICE teachers (in that order), as well as a few minor characters.
All in all, the best series of 2002, hands down, in my book, and one of my all time favorites.
I'm out...
