Anime horror/thriller recommendations . . .

Postby macchinainterna » Wed Mar 12, 2008 12:02 pm

I have a friend at work and he's beginning to show an interest in anime and asked me for a few recommendations.

Thing is, he's a big horror buff and he was mainly asking me about some worthwhile horror/thriller animes I thought he would enjoy. I'm not a huge fan of horror, and I don't know a lot of quality titles in the genre. So I thought I'd ask here and see what horror animes you would recommend, excluding Elfen Lied and Perfect Blue (They are already on my list for him).

Boogiepop Phantom. Weird, non-linear and very creepy.

Claymore is sort of horror. Killing monsters in gruesome bloody style sure isn't comedy :)

Ninja Scroll, again, more or less one of the bloodiest animes I have ever watched. Not sure if it is "horror" or just bloody.
Anime, one of the few things about the internet that doesn't make me hate the internet.

Hellsing could fit in the horror category, but it's soft talking about jumping under the bed...
Try Hugurashi No Naku Koro Ni, if you can stand the first two or three episodes, you'll certainly watch all the anime.

Well, I'm not very experienced with horror/thriller anime. With that said, I wouldn't call it horror, but I would consider Death Note to be a psychological thriller.

Also, a rather new anime that's out in Japan right now that I think would be considered horror is Mnemosyne. I believe you can find the first 2 episodes online somewhere. Here's the drawback to this one though: it's an OVA sequence with 6 episodes and it only airs once a month. So the third episode won't air until next month. It has been quite good so far, though.

Monster, Narutaru (but not immediately so perhaps not a good choice), Death Note, and Higurashi No Naka Koro Ni.
