Anime Recommendations Redux

Postby macchinainterna » Tue Feb 05, 2008 12:10 pm

Hi again.

First, I want thank everybody for all the great recommendations from the last time I asked.

After checking out a lot of the series that caught my or were referred by other members, I find my interest in anime at a near standstill. There just aren't a lot of new shows that look appealing to me.

So, I was hoping I could just ask for some recommendations (Excluding the most popular titles on here) from all of you one last time. Again, I'm big on steampunk, but I also prefer anything that has a great story, great laughs, or challenges me to think.

Below are some series I do have an interest in.

Black Cat
Mushishi
Witchblade (Currently watching on IFC)
Death Note

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion
if that doesn't get you back into anime I don't know what will

Clannad is also worth mentioning (not really up your alley it seems, but you might like it)
and if you like Clannad you'll also like Air and Kanon(2006)

I've only seen 2 episodes, but I wouldn't count Gundam 00 out either

Higurashi no Naku koro ni isn't very new...but it's interesting at the very least

To Malificus:

I've seen videos, but I never gave Kino's Journey much thought. I'll have to check it out. I haven't heard much about Monster, but what I have heard about it was pretty good. I'll look into it when it hits the States. Thanks!

To Chrono63:

I've never even heard of Baccano before. I'll have to look it up. Thanks!

To Kariudo:

If it was released by Sunrise, then chances are that I'll love Code Geass. Sunrise hasn't disappointed me yet. ;)

As for Clannad, if it's as sad as I hear Air is, then I might not last long with it.

Thanks for the recommendations! ^^

Highly suggest:

KARAS
-action/violence with deep underlying themes

FRUITS BASKET
-cute sort of "romantic comedy" that poses several themes regarding humanity's greatest flaws and creates that through various characters and situations.

OURAN HIGH SCHOOL HOST CLUB
-best "romantic comedy" anime period. Shows that underneath us all lie fears and troubles, no matter how "pretty" we are.

KINO'S JOURNEY
-whore for making people think. Poses the flaws in humanity into countries and situations that the protagonist goes through.

AH! MY GODDESS
-mixture of fun comedy and tragic romance. Mostly shows how luck and love are intertwined.

LOVELESS
-yaoi anime (guyxguy) that shows humanities deep issues regarding finding one's true self through adversity and turmoil. Also a nice romance. Has action and "spell binding" scenes.

All make you think and all give you laughs at one point or another (except maybeh for Karas, which has zero humor at all....)

Thanks for the recommendations! Actually, I own both Karas OVAs and thought they were great. I wouldn't have ever thought that Fruits Basket had such a theme to it, so I'll have to give it a look. I've seen quite a few videos to Ouran, and I liked what I saw, so I'll check it out sometime. That's two for Kino's Journey, definitely looking into that one! I've always wanted to see Ah! My Goddess, but never got around to it. As for Loveless, I might be able to sit through it even though I'm not a big yaoi person. Again thanks for the suggestions!

For great story, I highly recommend Seirei no Moribito (Guardian of the Sacred Spirit). It has a brilliant plot, memorable characters, and slick action sequences, all sewn together with a production value that never drops.

Monster is excellent, but it'll probobly never hit the states.
Code Geass is excellent. I'd say watch it before Monster because Monster will take way too long to finish.
CLANNAD is PURE WIN and not nearly as confusing and depressing as AIR.
Try to fit it in somewhere.

x2 for Higurashi

I also recommend:
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Fate/stay night

Can't say that I've ever heard of Seirei no Moribito. I'll have to look into it. Thanks!

To Ishbalan:

With that said, then I'll be sure to look into Clannad and Monster at some point!

I haven't heard of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (I'll be looking up that one too), but I have heard of Fate/Stay Night and it looks to be right up my ally. It's a shame that it's a Geneon title. Maybe I can find some obscure shopping sites that still have it in stock . . . Thanks for the recommendations!

Do it now. I shit you not when I say it will be the best moment of your life, you were born to watch this show.

Also, seeing as you enjoyed Death Note you should get Code Geass.

...but only after CLANNAD.

or else >:C

Seirei no Moribito x2, I need to get the novels when Scholastic finishes translating them, brilliant story, characters, themes and the action isn't overblown Shounen type stuff

Wow, if that didn't seal the deal for me then nothing will. XD

Okay, Clannad's a go then!

BTW, your avatar is made of pure win. ;)
