Is Martian Successor Nadesico any good?

Postby the Black Monarch » Mon Jan 06, 2003 10:12 pm

I've seen clips, mostly from the video set to the Futurama extended theme and from a video that compared its intro to that of Evangelion. It looks interesting, especially that green-eyed girl who seems to be some kind of replacement for Rei Ayanami. Should I check it out?

It is very addictive. I watched the entire series twice in a role. and the girl's name is Ruri. The only thing I think is kinda annoying about the dub is they used Shinj's voice although in Nadesico they allow the voice actor to do more comedic lines. I highly recommend it to anyone.

I want to get it myself when I get money. I've heard it's really funny, and it sounds good from the description on the back of the box too.

it's pretty fun series! Not the best, far from the worst, just all around a good one to own. But don't take my word for it. Rent an episode or 4 first then decide!

You can get the entire box set as mentioned in that Best Buy's thread up there. The only thing you might want to additionally look for is the Gekiganger 3 OVA and The Prince of Darkness Movie that are also technically part of the series.

I definately think that Nadesico is a very innovative anime series. It's probably the only anime series where the main character is both a cook and a pilot. It's also the only anime I know of where they have anime... watching anime. Almost all old-school Giant Robot fans will get a wry grin out of those portions of it. It's also a very wacky series. And in my top 10 anime series list.

I thought Ruri had yellow eyes. (Maybe I'm color blind? :D) Ryoko's the one with green hair, don't remember if she had green eyes too. But then again Ryoko's definately nothing like Rei, save maybe the hairstyle.

OMGWTFLOL!

Okay, I'm convinced. I must watch that show. Anime watching anime... that's just... damn...

And her eyes are sort of a puke yellow-green. Hair is light gray. I'm betting she's Ruri. How many characters have close-ups of their eyes blinking during the intro?

Mihoshi loved to watch anime on the Tenchi Muyo OAVs. It was a melodramatic animated soap opera with little bubble people. Very bizarre...

Ah, but the soap opera was not a 43 episode extravangaza full of youth, passion, and the power to motivate an entire planet. :)

Nadesico's review episode also makes you wonder, if we watch anime, does it watch back? 0_o

If the girl has grayish hair, it is almost surely Ruri. She's actually just slightly more emotionally responsive than Rei, which in my opinion is a good thing. Her seiyuu is Minami Omi who has done such quiet yet memorable characters as Hyatt from Excel Saga, and Kozue from Onegai Teacher.

I found the series to be entertaining to begin with, but really started to bore me about 10 episodes or so from the end. Probably more. As soon as it started using Ruri as a vehicle of fanservice, it just lost it for me.

The Gekiganger III OVA was really classy though.

Yay! Uh-oh... the Rei figure around my neck might get jealous...

Sorry, but that means nothing to me. I'm only familiar with the characters from 3 anime series :)

Ruri? Fanservice?

I don't remember fan service for Ruri...

I thought it to be incredibly funny when she kicked that machine to make it work... :P

I don't remember fanservice though. The movie is defintely worth checking out to see grown-up Ruri, who has a very defining prescence to her.

yeah....older ruri rocks the casba. The original series was very good in my opinion. One of the first series I started colleting. Good humor and plot as well. The movie is very confusing if you don't know about the two novels that take place between the end of the first series and the movie. They never really do fully explain what happened. A definate change of pace from the series in terms of feel. Prince of darkness was much more dark and serious and sort of depressing, but it had lots of good elements in it as well.
