Fuck Geneon. They've done some of the worst DVD releases in history. Not that they haven't had their share of good releases, but I've actually seen bootlegs better than some of their releases.

.. well, that does explain why their prices have been falling on what they are trying to sell.

.. In Minnesota you can not get the Anime Network on Cable to save your life! DSS charges too much and is not available in all area's

.. If the Management from A.D. Vision ( Geneon Entertainment ) worked for me, they would have been Dismissed years ago for not understanding the Basic's of Distribution!
1) Reach the Public at ANY COST -- profits come slowly but Boldly.
2) Screw the Market Value ( what others are charging ) and make the other guy lower his prices -- profits come slowly but Boldly.
3) Find Advertising that works and stick with it -- profits come slowly but Boldly.

.. just how many times must Anime Distribution fail to jump in the Ocean because they don't know how to swim !?!

Idiots! 8-)

@post-it: I really hope you're not trying to imply that A.D. Vision and Pioneer are (or even are owned by) the same company.

DMKA: I guess I just got lucky. I've seen their releases of Trigun, Hellsing, Haibane Renmei, X, and Fushigi Yuugi. Most of these had great English dubs, and most of them had really nice packaging and extras (those booklets they include with the box sets that are simply packed with helpful and interesting information). I won't say the prices were always justified ($200 for one season of Fushigi Yuugi? friend in college always called them "Pioneer, the pioneers of high prices in animé"), but they're the only company I've seen who were that consistently good about packaging extras.

@Scintilla: Geneon Entertainment and Pioneer are the lowest prices around. Fushigi Yuugi Episoides 01 - 52 were $79.95 when it was first released in Minnesota. Hand Maid May 1/10 - 11/10 is still too high at $58.95. Even Stellvia Of The Universe is $79.95 ( made it available for purchase two months ago, I bought it. ) The problem seems to be Fair Distribution and Consistent Pricing in the US and Canada .. now comes the question of "Who Is Doing This Price Gouging and why are they making things only available in certain area's" instead of ALL locations for ALL the same Prices.
.. Gas at the Pump today was 20¢ per gallon cheaper at my location than the $2.76/gallon in the cities. ( same gas, different distributors! ) .. so, how much was it in New Jersey today ? [ rhetorical question ]

.. Distribution .. the middle man .. the selling location; someone needs to be audited -- but who!?? [ rhetorical question ]

.. if a DVD set cost $12.87 to make and is $55.00 - $200.00 in the stores; gee, I wonder why sales are so low at the Main Distribution Office.

Again, I'm not saying they don't do good releases. I am saying that they are responsible for some of the worst releases in history. Not just in anime release history, but in the history of the existence of DVDs.

Example? Here.

Bear in mind that neither of these have been filtered or touched in any way other than the fact that I've deinterlaced, cropped, and resized them with the exact same method (lanczos resize, and telecide). Yes, the Geneon copy is ghosted/blended throughout, even when you watch it on a television DVD player, on top of every single other flaw imaginable (dotcrawl, rainbowing, extreme discoloration, noise, pixelation, ringing; it even has macroblocking at many parts).

I'll say it again; they've done good releases. But they're also responsible for...well you have two eyes.

Of all the North American distributors, I think Geneon had the best authored DVDs overall. They also licensed some more obscure titles and interesting live action films. From an AMV editor's point of view these are sad times.

@post-it: Oh, they've definitely gotten better over time; I was referring more to how things were back in, say, 2002-03, when it seemed like Pioneer box sets retailed around $200 for one season, while Bandai and ADV were more like $130/season, TRSI was more like $100/season, and CPM was even cheaper...

($80 for the whole thing? Who was selling FY for that cheap?!)

@Scintilla: I've pulled-up some of my receipts from 2003, mine-you these are local stores in the town of Bemidji Mn:

Galaxy Angels $67.88 per season - Beltrami Video
Love Hina $79.99 1 - 24 ( the Movie set with #25, Xmas, the Island and OVA's not included )

Arjuna $67.88 - Hubbard Video
Magical Twilight $26.99 - Beltrami Video

Gene Shaft .. anyway; in the Cities ( MPLS/ST. Paul ) very few stores were even stocking Anime -- if they did have anything, Gold Coast was the highest prices but usually the worst selection .. FMP .. FMA .. HellSing .. X-tv .. they normally started at $89.95 and up for year old releases.

Oh shit! Oh FU**ING SHIT!!!

Geneon Entertainment Exits (10:46 AM EDT): Though the finality of things is still up in the air, Geneon Entertainment has sent out information to retailers regarding their 4th quarter plans. According to the information, Geneon will be shipping all releases they have in the queue for street dates through 11/05/2007. All orders placed after this coming Friday is non-returnable. As of 12/31/2007, they will be shutting down, apparently completely as AnimeNation is listing everything past 11/11/2007 as canceled. Plans for beyond 12/31/2007 are still up in the air but what little is being said indicates that they're intending to focus on their own properties in a similar way to Kadokawa Pictures USA is doing things.

Damn, I need to get a hold of the few of the Geneon titles pronto before they're.....gone?!

I'm not sure I am following... Does it mean that anything ordered after tomorrow won't be shipped? How about what's yet to be released?

It's saying that if you order something around tomorrow or so, you can't return it back to them. As for the upcoming releases, they're in limbo. Here are the titles affected:

- Rozen Maiden
- Black Lagoon
- When They Cry
- Karin
- Hellsing Ultimate
- Nanoha
- Guardian of the Sacred Spirit
- Familiar of Zero
- Saiunkoku Monogatari
- Shana OVA
- Kyou Kara Maoh! Season 2
- The Law of Ueki
- Deltora Quest

Those are a combination of the ones recently licensed back in the summer and the ones that are in the middle in releasing. Ugh, this is depressing.
