Most Underrated Animes & Manga

Everyone has favorites, but which do you honestly think get the short end of the stick, and exactly why? Too heavy a plotline to wade through, too confusing, thought of as stereotypical, too obscure..?

Angelic Layer

.. the plot was to See Her Mother but the story took a Fantastic Twist into a Remote-Controllers Dream-Come-True Floor-Show of Movements and Skills.

actually, the Manga failed while the Anime totally Amused and entertained on Dreams.

x2. I agree totally. Not only because of that, but also because it seems to be quite obscure.

Please Teacher. The 'hero' is a mature man [though body-wise, he's 15] chronologically 18, and he DOESN'T nosebleed, is NOT in a harem [it's a triangle, something believable], and he literally gets the girl...

Boys Be. Most realistic anime evar with nice music and good poetic dialogue at intro and end.

Black Lagoon. Watch the dub, laugh your ass off, and be amazed

Claymore. hot babes with HUGE swords... Um, yeah original to me, that's for sure.

Code Geass. Main gal has sexy green hair, also original to me and Lelouch's nickname, "Lulu" is funny

Ikki Tousen, best form of hentai fighting you're gonna get. They dumbed down Tenjou Tenge too much for my tastes

will think of more after moving sprinkler

3x3 Eyes. Too gory for most people. Dark Horse never finished translating the series due to low popularity.

Key: The Metal Idol. Too old or obscure for a lot of people. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoyed Elfen Lied.

Slam Dunk. One of the best sports series out there. Neither the anime or the manga got the chance they deserved here in the states.

Shadow Skill don't get enough cred... and its a great one (ova, movie, and series).

Birdy: The Mighty is another one that doesn't get enough attention, yet another really great one.

Finally, Galaxy Express 999 may be huge in Japan, but its US audience is slim, comparitively speaking to big anime titles, which is very sad since its a great series, greater films, and has some amazing spin offs.

Tsukikage Ran, Carried by the Wind.

A hilarious comedy anime with great fight scenes. Given a dynamic story arc (beyond 'Ran gradually gets to dislike Meow less') to break it out of the formulaic, a full 26 eisodes, and more effort in the art department, this would be a classic. As it is, hardly anyone seems to have heard of it.

Rune Soldier, too. Fairly funny, very cool to look at, but not too well-known.

In my opinion, their mistake was forgetting that they were a Dungeons-and-Dragons-based advenure in addition to being a comedy. I kept waiting for them to go out and cruise dungeons and fight monsters, but they pretty much hung around in town going to festivals and part-time jobs and petty errands after Louie got himself accepted by the group. Even the end of the series wasn't very fantasy-hero-like. Just anime-hero-like. (though one has to admit, Louie's method of foiling the enemy were unique) In short, we needed less people and more hobgoblins.

Hmm... Truly underrated? My pick is Oniisama E or the original Yokohama Shopping Trip. I could probably come up with some other anime I really like, but proving the point, how many of you would have even heard of them?
